So what do the Glenn crazies think about Al Jazeera acquiring Current TV? Glad you asked!

First off, we have an unrelated comment by someone who thinks any Russian name is Communist:
"With a name like Tolstoi one can guess you are a liberal ass that has no Idea who Jesus is!!!! You will be cursing Jesus while you die Lev!"

Anyway:
- It seems there is no end to what the left will do to pollute and ruin the freedom of speech in this country.
- I watched AlJezeera celebrating when we got hit on 9/11.
- When a nation governed by the people eventually choose evil over good, their laws become corrupt and that nation ripens for destruction.
- I have no doubt that Al Gore and company have much more in common with Muslim extremist backing, America hating, corrupt, despicable, tyrannical organizations then with Glenn Beck.
- Our laws should be protecting us from foreign governments in our media
- but them selling it to an Islamic extremist tells me exactly where our country is headed. They should NEVER have been allowed to purchase ANYTHING in our GREAT country. That was America's 1st mistake...!
- I will NEVER watch TV run by Al Queda or Al Jazeera or any other radical muslim front.
- My point is that muslims and jews ARE THE SAME. There is no difference.
- Al Gore now advancing the cause of terrorists, The man truly has gone over the edge of sanity. I can't believe our government would allow our enemies to broadcast in this country.
- Al Gore should be investigated for treason or collusion with the enemies of the nation. How much blood will soon be found to be upon his hands due to this deal?
- our children will be watching Live Beheadings on our own U.S. network, of U.S. Citizens be killed by terrorist
- $400 million -- the price of allowing the "smoke of Satan" to enter.

Glenn Beck Defends Gay Marriage: Republicans Need To 'Expand Our Own Horizon'
http://www.businessinsider.com/glenn-beck-defends-gay-marriage-video-2012-12#ixzz2Em5wKk7K

"Conservative firebrand Glenn Beck has joined a growing chorus of Republican commentators in defending gay marriage, laying out a strong case for ending government opposition to letting same-sex couples wed."
...
""Let me take the pro-gay marriage people and the religious people - I believe that there is a connecting dot there that nobody is looking at, and that's the Constitution," Beck said during a recent segment of his online talk show. "The question is not whether gay people should be married or not. The question is why is the government involved in our marriage?""
...
""What we need to do, I think, as people who believe in the Constitution, is to start looking for allies who believe in the Constitution and expand our own horizon," Beck said. "We would have the ultimate big tent.""

I know I should stop reading these, but I just can't get enough. Here's more choice bits from commenters to the stories on Glenn Beck's page post-Obama's election.

- The government will try to arrest Beck at some point, we should form a citizen guard so that they have to kill us to get to Glenn.
- George Soros paid Hannity, Limbaugh, and O'Reilly not to talk about the benefit Bush's tax cuts had on the economy.
- The Republicans will continue to lose as long as they keep leaning too far to the left.
- Women in the workplace has led to the downfall of families.
- There are many Democrats who will vote Republican and are in hiding due to the "insanity" of the Democratic party.
- Romney lost due to Marxist propaganda that misstated the Republican views.
- Rather than cater to minorities, the GOP needs to attack them more, otherwise they will feel patronized.
- The correct way to get more minorities to vote Republican is to not talk about race.
- Boehner is actually a Democrat, he's just pretending to be Republican because he wants the power of the Speaker of the House.
- Obama won because Voter ID laws were not passed.
- Hurricane Sandy was a warning from God of the true punishment that would come if we rejected Him by electing Obama.
- The US was given to Americans by God, He simply allowed the Indians to live there until we came. It's not correct to say we took America from the Indians.

This is all from one article! Although I was actually surprised to see that some of the commenters wrote fairly insightful and reasonable things about Romney's loss and what the GOP needed to do moving forward.

But the number one, not really that funny, thing that I see over and over again on these comments is the idea that Obama was re-elected because people want government assistance because they're too lazy to work. I haven't heard a single person make this argument on the Democratic side.

So, I know, I know. It's Glenn Beck. We expect the whacko from him. And, of course, he's got every right to speak his mind; I certainly don't think he should be censored.

But at what point does he become responsible for the actions of people who follow his advice?

let's talk about talking. )

Who is that man preaching vigilance in Jerusalem? Is it the Antichrist come to reclaim his throne? No, it is merely that blowtorch of ignorance: Glenn Beck.

One of my favorite aspects of his speech is that he spoke against fear, hate, and lies. He goes on to try to instill fear in the hearts of Palestinians and their supporters. He also simply hates to admit to the falsity of his position being based on love. (I guess there is some love in his heart. We can see it in the Goldline ads.)

Evidently his appearance sparked some controversy, one article says:
Israeli religious and political figures both on the left and right came out against the rally, presumably as a reaction to Beck's track record of controversial remarks. There was even a Facebook page called "Glenn Beck Stay Home" created in protest.

But in the end, 1,700 supporters showed for the sold-out event, and an additional 3,000 gathered at a nearby viewing station where it was beamed in live, a spokesman for Beck told The Cutline. The Guardian, among others, contested those figures, reporting a "surprising number of empty seats belied the organisers' claims that demand for tickets had outstripped availability." Many of the attendees were evangelical Christians from the United States, according to reports.
At this point in history, the Palestinians are the underdog. Their treatment by Israel has not inspired support in the eyes of many. I cannot condone the extremity of the resistance to Israeli domination in the region, but I can understand why that reaction is extreme. Beck must be oblivious to the horrors of life for those dispossessed by Israel.

What do you think of this visit by the Tea Party icon to Israel?

Glenn Beck puts liberal prof.’s life in danger.

The New York Times wrote an article today about Glenn Beck and how he is putting a professor’s life in danger  with his hate speech. I found it interesting.

Frances Fox Piven , a City University of New York professor, has been a primary character in Mr. Beck’s warnings about a progressive take-down of America. Ms. Piven, Mr. Beck says, is responsible for a plan to “intentionally collapse our economic system.”

Her name has become a kind of shorthand for “enemy” on Mr. Beck’s Fox News Channel program, which is watched by more than 2 million people, and on one of his Web sites, The Blaze. This week, Mr. Beck suggested on television that she was an enemy of the Constitution.

Never mind that Ms. Piven’s radical plan to help poor people was published 45 years ago, when Mr. Beck was a toddler. Anonymous visitors to his Web site have called for her death, and some, she said, have contacted her directly via e-mail.

In response, a liberal nonprofit group, the Center for Constitutional Rights, wrote to the chairman of Fox News, Roger Ailes, on Thursday to ask him to put a stop to Mr. Beck’s “false accusations” about Ms. Piven.

The argument is that Piven is no longer a radical and that what she wrote 45 years ago shoudn’t make her a threat today. Kind of like Bill Ayers, the softer cuddly side of radicalism; after all they are old people now!

But…she has called for violence as recently as 12-10-2010, in the article she wrote for The Nation: mobilizing-jobless:

It is clear that this professor is advocating violence. Legally I don’t think she is inciting violence but, does Glenn Beck’s exposure of what Frances Fox Piven said both 40 some years ago and back in December of last year hold him responsible for threats she has received? Is the New York Times being responsible in its journalistic pursuits by presenting the story the way they did?

Note that all these standard bashing targets have one thing in common: they're  liberal Jews: Boxer, Feinstein, Sanders, Frank.....why is it that if the Right-Wingers like to bash Democrats the Democrats they target for it are Jews?

The pattern I've mentioned here of the right wing embrace of physical intimidation is becoming more and more evident and less and less deniable –

In Alaska, Joe Miller’s hired goon squad was recently caught on camera using physical force to prevent reporters from asking pesky questions of either Republican candidate Joe Miller or Tony Hopfinger, the reporter said goons had just handcuffed and ”detained.”

William Fulton, Miller’s Security Contractor: If you don’t leave right now, I’m going to put you in handcuffs too.

Unimpressed Reporter: Uh huh. And who are you?

Fulton: You’re trespassing sir…

Reporter: …and who are you? …

Reporter Jill Burke (to hired goons): Who are you? You’re not even with the school. No, you’re not with the school, you’re not with APD…don’t touch my camera. You’re not gonna touch my camera…He’s touching me. Stop touching me. Stop touching me. STOP TOUCHING ME. OFF OF ME NOW!...

Reporter: LET GO OF HER!

I'm all for free speech and Glenn Beck is certainly exercising his right. I doubt Beck incited Byron Williams' shooting spree, just like I doubt Joseph McCarthy incited the Red Scare. What I believe is that Beck and McCarthy fueled their according fires and watched the world burn gleefully.

In the audio, Williams says that he looks at Beck "more like a schoolteacher" than a newscaster, and that he began watching Fox News just to see Beck:
"And it was the things that he did, it was the things he exposed that blew my mind. Beck would never say anything about a conspiracy, would never advocate violence, he'll never do anything like, of this nature, but he'll give you every ounce of evidence that you could possibly need."

Glenn Beck Dreams about Building a Wall:

You can have one side of the mountains, you can have the other side. You can have California and everything in it. Just leave us alone. We’re going to build a huge wall because you’re going to try to steal everything…Within five years – this is why we’ll have to have a wall – they’ll turn their people against us. We can give them all the best stuff. Within five years they’ll be blaming it on us and they will be turning their people against the people behind the wall saying ‘It’s they’re fault. They did it to us!’ We’ll be so unbelievably prosperous that they won’t have any idea what to do.

The right is growing more and more insulated. Sharron Angle, Jan Brewer, and Christine O'Donnell seem determined to get out their message mainly through the sympathetic outlet of Fox News, a resource that enables timid conservatives to experience the opposition only through the comforting filter of other right wingers.

In a recent post, [livejournal.com profile] eracerhead attempted to argue that the "Glen Beck fandom" is motivated primarily (or perhaps even solely) by racism. This argument is not original to him, and it even enjoys a relative degree of popularity. I think it will be instructive to consider it in more detail.

In brief, the argument is that since none of the fandom's grievances are legitimate, their actual motive must be racism because 1) they are predominantly white as a group, and 2) the current president is black.

This is an odd idea. [livejournal.com profile] eracerhead surely doesn't intend to imply that any white person who disagrees with the president must ipso facto be a racist. It seems that the disagreement of white Beckites in particular is being singled out here, probably because some of them actually are racist. But in spite of that, and even if all the Beckites' grievances are illegitimate as well, it doesn't follow that their primary or sole motivation must be racism.

[livejournal.com profile] eracerhead offers us the following list of afflictions from which the Beckites purportedly want to "take back the country:"

Could it be spending or big government? Nope, as they did not object to Bush or Reagan.
Could it be taxation? Nope, as taxes are lower now than when Bush was in office.
Could it be socialized medicine? Nope, as the healthcare bill was in no way socializing medicine.
Could it be the secularization of America. Nope, as America has always been a secular nation.

The assertions with which [livejournal.com profile] eracerhead dismisses these grievances are all painfully glib. Nonetheless, they are the crux of his accusation against the Beckites (unless you count the photograph accompanying his post, which I am charitably ignoring).

But let's disregard this glibness. Let's suppose that [livejournal.com profile] eracerhead is correct in every case, and that the Beckites therefore hold grievances based on beliefs which are either inconsistent or false. Does this entitle us to conclude that the Beckites are only motivated by racism? Of course not. Incorrect or nonsensical grievances do not thereby lose their power to motivate, for human beings have an apparently boundless capacity to sincerely believe things which are incorrect and nonsensical.

In addition, even if we allow false grievances to be disqualified as valid motives, there's no reason to single out racism as the only remaining motivation. One can easily identify any number of distinct motivating factors behind the Beckites' disapprobation. As a group, they consist mostly of rural middle-class people with a paucity of education — that is, one of the groups hit hardest by the recession. They are also older, and they adhere to standards of value which are becoming increasingly outmoded. In short, they feel themselves to be disaffected. And on top of everything else, they are inflicted with the bitter sectarianism which has increasingly come to be the predominant feature of political discourse in the US.

These people are not equipped to think clearly about any of the issues mentioned above, but that doesn't lessen how seriously they perceive their predicament. And to a considerable extent, their predicament extends to the rest of us as well. The US is in the midst of a serious recession: government spending is indeed going to be affected by public debt and a depressed economy, and taxes will probably have to be raised; current social programs will be imperiled and new ones will be difficult to implement; and public battles between and amongst secularists and various believers, while certainly not as pressing as the other items on the list, are at least a continual irritation. I don't think it's unreasonable to assert that everyone (as long as they are fair-minded) should be able to identify with the root causes of the Beckites' discontent.

To conclude: there is no good reason to suppose that Glenn Beck and his fans are primarily or solely motivated by racism, even though many of them may be racist. (My suspicion is that the racial bigotry in question has the same relation to Tea Party ideology — whatever that may be — as pork does to a Congressional bill.)

It is both disingenuous and uncivil to sweepingly dismiss an entire group based on a glib accusation of racism. At best, it displays the same shallowness and truculence of which it is so delightfully easy to take note in the political engagements of the Beckites, and at worst, it can only be a malicious rhetorical stratagem intended to evade debate. In either case, it is unfortunately symptomatic of the political sectarianism mentioned above, and as such it should be abandoned by anyone who cares about the quality of public political discourse.

I have some other advice for Tea Partiers. While you are there, stop off in SE DC on the 'bad' side of the Anacostia River and visit the Frederick Douglass museum. Take a cab if you are afraid of the metro.

On September 28, 2010, political commentator Glenn Beck** will be hosting his "Restoring Honor" rally in Washington DC. While the event is billed as a 'non-political' one, the suggestion that America needs to have its honor restored and the speaker list which includes Sarah Palin automatically make this a political event with Tea Party overtones.

September 28, 2010 is the anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I have a Dream" speech, which he delovered in front of the Lincoln Memorial. Glenn Beck will also be presenting from the Lincoln Memorial. There is nothing racist about Beck's choice of dates. However, there is a very strong probability that some people will find it to be racist. Some folks have been accusing the Tea Party of being racist since its start, and this choice of date is bound to set some of them off.

Glenn Beck Loves this.

I've been reading the Tea Party e-mails, and one of the recurring themes is, "They call us racists! But we are just talking about the economy!" The Tea Party is unified through a feeling of wrongful accusation and oppresion resulting from this accusation. History has shown that these feelings do wonders to motivate groups; resistance movements are some of the most motivated groups out there.

By choosing MLK's speech date for his big rally, it's pretty obvious that Mr. Beck is baiting people to call him and his followers 'racists'. There really isn't any other explanation for picking that date.

I actually do have sympathy for the individual Tea Partiers. In many cases, their anger is justified, and we do need people in this country that will take a stand against excessive government spending. However, manipulative people like Beck have been hijacking that anger and feeding it an aganda that is at times dangerously stupid and counterproductive.

Unfortunately, I'm going to be out of town during Beck's "Restoring Honor" rally. I would have liked to photoblog it for you.

-------------------------------------

**For those of you who aren't familiar with Glenn Beck, he is a commentator on America's Fox News Network, and one of the leaders of the Tea Party movement. He frequently talks about economic collapse in his program, which is sponsored by a company that sells gold, and Beck has been known to go directly from his gloomy economic forecast into a testimony on why you should buy gold from this company. Here is a random clip of Beck doing his standard routine:

Certain people continue to believe that if they can show that the other side has done something, than that excuses them for doing the same thing-- for whatever reason. Does it? No. I don't think it does. Here is the most recent example:

So example 1: Media Matters:
Originally posted a video clip of Beck's cronies sidekicks blaming the latest Manchester shooting on Olberman.

The original title "Beck sidekicks Gray and Burguiere: Keith Olberman and media responsible for Manchester shooting." This title is followed a clip of them talking. The clip cuts before they continue on to state that they were trying to make a comparison, so it would seem that they are stating this earnestly.

Here is the public correction:
http://mediamatters.org/mmtv/201008060020
*CORRECTION: The original headline on this clip did not make clear that Beck's co-hosts were being satirical when they linked MSNBC host Keith Olbermann to the Manchester shooting. The original clip also did not include their subsequent statements that Olbermann was not responsible for the shooting. Media Matters regrets the error.

Now, the right wing has been jumping all over this egregious cutting of a clip. It's good to know that these people have come to reality and realized that they shouldn't be defending editing clips to say other than they mean at least right? Maybe one of them will admit they were wrong about that now? Perhaps they will condemn any future or past attempts to purposely edit video to try to make people believe something other than the truth? I'm sure now that they have come to reason they will condemn these too. Right?

But seriously. Do you think that the Media Matters edit was on purpose? Every right-wing pundit seems to be sure of it. Do you think their correction was sufficient? Do you think this equates on any level with Mr. Breitbart's smear video? And maybe some people might think this, do you think this somehow excuses right-wing attempts to persuade people to believe things that are not true using video?

As to my opinion: If there ends up being evidence that it was on purpose in order to make these people look bad, whomever is responsible probably better resign, because that's the opposite of integrity. I doubt it was on purpose though because it would be so easy to look up and see it's not true. I think someone did something really sloppy. I don't know too much about Media Matters though-- I don't know how they get their articles or postings, is it like an ireport thing? Or did some editor really screw the pooch? I don't know.
---
And as a second small issue: the actual tape posted:
Does Beck's fearmongering and the tea partiers resorting to believing the government is going to take their guns and resort to communism equate to Olberman claiming that people are being racist and a black guy shooting a bunch of people for racism equate? Does someone doing things Olberman never said equate to some people believing something Beck said? what is this i dont even Nevermind, don't discuss that one.
