Hello! There are only 4 days left for EU citizens to sign the European Citizens' Initiative petition to ban conversion therapy in the European Union.

- 570,000 signatures are still needed (with the massive mobilisation currently happening, we're getting ~100,000 new signatures a day, so there's a chance)
- 2 countries still need to reach the threshold: Slovenia and the Netherlands are in good position

Please share on all your social media! Here's a Tumblr post and a Bluesky one, for a start. If you have friends in Slovenia and/or the Netherlands, please message them. A lot of people don't have the time to catch up on their dashboards/timelines and can easily miss the information. Thanks a lot!

What you get is lack of consideration for the lives of trans people, as well as LGBT people in general:

Oklahoma banned trans students from bathrooms. Now Nex Benedict is dead after a fight at school

The fact that neither an ambulance nor the police were called is especially concerning, and demonstrates just how much the school did not care about this individuals' well-being. Legal action needs to be taken against the school for neglect of duty.

In terms of LibsofTikTok and their effects on this matter, due to its gross popularity we've seen just how much hatred has persisted towards LGBT people, even with the societal progress the West has made in just a few decades. Queer people are all in danger from this vile rhetoric, and LGBT children growing up in backwards places like Oklahoma will continue to endure horrible treatment like this.

The principal, the superintendent, and everybody responsible for what happened needs to lose their jobs, pensions, and freedom.

Nobody needed to die.

DeSantis’ ‘anti-woke’ bills are costing Florida millions of dollars in business

Even though it's not part of DeSantis' strategy, one part of me is happy that government and big business are having a "falling out" in their collusive relationship and I hope it happens elsewhere too. In the long run it's better for private citizens when businesses and government are mortal enemies rather than overly friendly, even if it's an accidental consequence of right-wing policymaking. In the short term it's going to cause some increased difficulty for people no matter how it comes to be though.

Although in a state so dependant in tourism it is kind of distressing. It's like biting the hand that feeds you. Only a moron would attack the state's largest employer or a man that can not handle the power granted him in DeSanitis' case. He has gone mad and the legislature just keeps bending over for more. At least the rest of the nation appears to see him more clearly as the egotistical, power mad Mussolini wannabe he really is.

Sad thing is, even when Meatball gets his butt handed to him in the primary, folks will still be stuck with him as governor for another two years. That's thanks to his pet legislature changing the law so he didn't have to resign to run for president. He can do a lot more damage those two years. There's no provision to recall him so the only hope is for Democrats to flip the state legislature in 2024 and impeach his fascist ass. Yeah, won't happen but people can dream.

What's really quite amusing to watch in Florida is that the Republicans cry 'freedom' and 'small government', but then elect a man who is pushing government control over business and personal freedoms as hard as he thinks he can get away with. Can some Floridian Republican explain how that works to me?

'We Have The Votes': The Senate Will Act This Week To Codify Same-Sex Marriage
With the midterm elections over, Democrats have found enough Republicans ready to join them in advancing basic LGBTQ rights.

This is amazing! I'm so glad they're doing this before the SC nixes it. It's a good idea to codify issues like this, because the court is in the old Kmart parking lot doing donuts right now.

Oh, and by the way:

"Republicans raised concerns that it would stifle religious liberty."

Those "concerns" always remind me of some people who don't like a certain type of vegetable. "I don't like that asparagus one bit. That crap shouldn't be on the shelf." You know, some of us don't like certain things in life but we just suck-it-up. :)

Hungary’s controversial anti-LGBT law goes into effect despite EU warnings:
A new law that bans the dissemination of content in schools deemed to promote homosexuality and gender change went into effect Wednesday despite a warning from Europe’s top rights watchdog that the law risks discrimination against LGBT people.

Ehm... "the law is necessary to ensure that the sexual education of children under 18 is the sole domain of parents.".... Oh we're OK then!

But srsly. It is virtually impossible to throw Hungary out of the EU. But, they can stop his EU funds and make life very difficult for the Hungarians. However, Germany is making a bit of cash from Hungary so has little interest in kicking him out. See the Realpolitik here?

If Hungary left the EU, Vlad would be over the Moon, so the people of Hungary wouldn't allow it, at the expense of Orban of course. Currently he's on a power trip and I suspect will become even more of a pain to the EU than before. What he's really after here is control of the education curriculum, so he can use it as a propaganda machine. Learning from the Chinese he is.

Oh, and Poland has been doing something similar for, like, ages now.

"Just face it, West Europe and East Europe have different values", one EMP argued. Yeah. "Family" vs "Queer". That's how it's being viewed around here. And we're supposed to be livingi in the 21st century. Go figure.

Florida governor signs bill targeting transgender athletes on 1st day of Pride Month

Sounds like a bigoted moron pandering to his peers.

Little Trumpers running around bleating about transgendered folks in sports is exactly the sort of ignorant crap lapped up by unthinking masses.

Love the nonsensical bullshit about forcing speech to be allowed on private platforms. I think DeSantis realizes such shit will be tossed in court, but will promote it anyway to get that precious Trump fan club vote.

Like transgenders in high-school and college is a huge problem...

I doubt it is legal for him to tell a private business who it is they can serve, will die in the courts.

Yes sure, I am sure the big tech companies care, Florida will be in litigation for years to come. How about they refuse to allow anyone from using their sites that has an IP address from Florida, think that would go over big...

Christian woman told to repent her ‘homosexual lifestyle’ or be banned from church

Short version: Krystal Cox, a salon owner in Woodstock GA, had been a congregant of the Woodstock Church of Christ for about five years. At some recent point, she divorced her husband, and started a relationship with another woman. In December, when the church elders learned of the relationship, they sent her a letter requesting that she meet with them to "discuss her situation and the condition of her soul." She ignored the letter.

In April, the church elders sent her a second letter, stating that if she failed to meet with them and repent before April 30th, she would not only be removed from the roster of church congregants, but her removal from the congregation would be announced to the rest of the congregation during services the following Sunday, directly encouraging the community to shun her.

Cox shared the letter on social media. Due to the public outcry, the church website and Facebook page have been taken offline, and none of the church elders are responding to media inquiries.

Putting a few sources for the same story, just so we get any potential "this is fake non-news from a non-mainstream media" type of derailment off the table right from the get-go:

Drag Queens Banned From Free Pride Glasgow Event Over Fears Of Offending Transgender People
Drag queens banned from Pride event 'because they may offend transgender people'
Drag queens banned from performing at Free Pride Glasgow event over fears acts will offend trans people

I know, that seems odd, stupid, and certainly very ironic. Trans-sexuals who often find themselves at the receiving end of discrimination, now make an effort to ban cross-dressers... based on what? That the latter aren't "trans enough" to be considered true members of the community? Even if they do support and celebrate the occasion and the cause that it represents? What the...

Somehow reminds me of the "you're not black enough" infighting that happened a while ago. But I digress.

As irrational as that particular brand of fear and hatred my be, some may've occasionally done the futile exercise of attempting to comprehend where it's coming from - against the advice of all past experience from encounters with bigots. Well, after a somewhat thorough sifting through tons of disgusting and outright nauseating displays of pure hatred, I've come up with this, hardly exhaustive, list of possible rationalizations for homophobia. With the respective counter-arguments (as if there's any reasoning with that sort of people, but still).

While we`re about stupid talking points... )

In the US, in Russia, in East Europe, and of course in the Arab countries and in most of Africa both outright homophobes and lots of ordinary people alike are genuinely convinced that the gays and lesbians are weaving some monstrous plot against humankind. Around the Internet forums that serve not so much as places for sharing information, as much as hubs for spreading ideas and "alternative explanations" of what's going on around the world (read: conspiracy theories), the fundamental features of that conviction are being shaped out.

For many conspiracy theorists, the homosexual people are secretly taking over the key positions around the world, and the recent years must have provided the irrefutable evidence for all that. In politics, in the economy and in sports, i.e. in the Holy Trinity of heterosexual masculinity, innumerable gays seem to have suddenly popped up and stolen the glory of poor oppressed "normal" people. A number of professional male athletes have "come out", and also politicians and top businessmen. Like German football player Thomas Hitzlsperger, recently. And also Apple CEO Tim Cook. And Latvian foreign minister Edgars Rinkevics, the first high-ranking politician in East Europe to openly declare himself gay. That's a unprecedented thing for the post-Soviet space.

Gays are not going away. Deal with it. )

This might come across as a bit of a surprise, but only a bit, given the place where it is happening. On the one hand, one would naturally expect that well-educated, highly qualified people (whose job is to help other people) would be able to find it in themselves to rise above such blatant bigotry - but I guess monsters in human guise of this sort do tend to dwell in every walk of life. So here is the actual story...

A pediatrician doctor has refused to treat an infant because the parents are lesbian:

Pediatrician refuses to treat baby with lesbian parents and there’s nothing illegal about it

Obviously, the doctor has a convenient protective umbrella over their religious beliefs and is allowed to refuse treating a patient. There is a nice loophole there, the American Medical Association saying that while doctors cannot refuse to provide care for patients based on sexual orientation, they can refuse treatment if the treatment itself is "incompatible with their personal, religious or moral beliefs". And it so happens that as of now, there is still no law protecting LGBT families from discrimination of this sort in that particular state.

Well, seems like the Ugandan constitutional court has just annulled a tough gay law that had been adopted earlier this year, and caused quite an uproar in the freedom-loving West. Albeit the ruling wasn't justified on the fact that this law is cruel and immoral in principle - instead, it was merely brought down due to a stated technicality ("[The Constitutional Court] ruled that the bill was passed by MPs in December without the requisite quorum and was therefore illegal"). So, seems like they're not saying anything about the constitutionality of the human rights abuse that is the law in question, just that it wasn't adopted via the proper procedure. That's nice, you know...

Some have already jubilantly asked the rhetoric question whether this doesn't constitute a rare moment of sanity, or just a temporary setback for an otherwise consistently violent and stunningly reactionary anti-gay agenda, which is sure to hit back with a vengeance pretty soon.

That said, my coming across the following documentary happens to be just timely:

This is happening for the first time in the 145 year history of the Vienna state opera, the so called "first building in the central ring", and one of the most famous landmarks in the Austrian capital. Last month the city was awash with the rainbow colours. A little further down the "ring" that encompasses Vienna's centre, the buildings of the major state institutions are lined up: the Rathaus (municipality), the University, the Imperial theatre... The same colours on their facades that day.

In the middle of June, the Austrian capital welcomed the Rainbow Parade for the 19th time. The event celebrates tolerance to people of a different homosexual orientation and advocates against discrimination. Just a couple of weeks before the event, the city was again full with men dressed as women and women dressed as flowers, who came for the other traditional event, the Life Ball. Both events indicate that this particular city and this particular country actively support the LGBT movement.

Conchita Wurst* wins Eurovision 2014 for Austria with Rise Like A Phoenix

* Wurst means 'sausage' in German

I feel sorry for all those outraged, licence-paying Medieval troglodytes who apparently had their Saturday family evening viewing suddenly "ruined" by Eurovision and then felt compelled to spleen vent around the social networks on a Sunday morning, instead of spending a sunny day picnicking or something just as nice, enjoying a few hours of their short lives with the folks they love, devoid of hatred and outrage.

I've just come back from Copenhagen with the family, and we had a great time at the event and around the city. To all those confused, insecure, rage-filled homophobic haters, I only have to say this: time to get off your sofas and enjoy the world outside your front doors and narrow minds - see you in Vienna!

Obama includes openly gay athletes in 2014 Olympic delegation
"King and Cahow are both openly gay athletes. Gay rights groups have urged the Obama administration to use the delegation selection to make a point about Russia's treatment of gays and lesbians."

"In what may be another slight to the Russian president, Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and first lady Michelle Obama will not attend the opening ceremony. This marks the first time since the 2000 Summer Olympic Games that a president, vice president, first lady or former president won't be part of the opening ceremony." (source)

That'll surely show 'em bad Russkies! I can see from now what's gonna happen next, tovarisch Putin appointing Edward Snowden head of the Russian Olympic delegation in Sochi and going all-preachy about transparency and honesty in international politics. And the shit'll keep rollin' rollin' rollin' baby. ;)

A participant in the "kissing protests" was attacked and kicked in a recent Moscow protest*

In the Sunday edition, the New York Times published an Op Ed by New York City actor, playwright, and producer Harvey Fierstein condemning the Russian crackdown on gay rights; with an appeal to use the upcoming Winter Olympic games in Sochi as a platform to condemn the homophobic policies of President Putin and the Russian parliament.

Mr. Fierstein noted in his op-ed:

...just six months before Russia hosts the 2014 Winter Games, Mr. Putin signed a law allowing police officers to arrest tourists and foreign nationals they suspect of being homosexual, lesbian or “pro-gay” and detain them for up to 14 days. Contrary to what the International Olympic Committee says, the law could mean that any Olympic athlete, trainer, reporter, family member or fan who is gay — or suspected of being gay, or just accused of being gay — can go to jail.

Earlier in June, Mr. Putin signed yet another antigay bill, classifying “homosexual propaganda” as pornography. The law is broad and vague, so that any teacher who tells students that homosexuality is not evil, any parents who tell their child that homosexuality is normal, or anyone who makes pro-gay statements deemed accessible to someone underage is now subject to arrest and fines. Even a judge, lawyer or lawmaker cannot publicly argue for tolerance without the threat of punishment.

Mr. Fierstein pointed to a recent case of a 23 year old gay man murdered in Volograd. When the man stated he was gay, he was beaten, his body violated with beer bottles, his clothing set on fire, his head crushed with a rock and his genitals removed. The crime was so ghastly, it's an example of homophobia being described as the motivation of the attack (most Russian authorities deny there are such attacks).

Recalling how the world largely ignored Adolf Hitler's treatment of Jewish citizens during the 1936 Olympic Games in Munich, in addition to a call on the International Olympic Committee, and political leaders to vocalize their concerns about the curbing of human rights, there is also a movement to have Olympic atheletes condemn the Russian policies by wearing gay right emblems on their uniforms, and speaking out when ever it's possible. I don't know how effective such a campaign would be, some in Russia already seem to have persecution complex, reminiscent of the Soviet era, or the Politburo in China complaining about Western interference regarding civil rights within their own country. But the moral imperative to speak out against brute bigotry, and discrimination against an entire class of a country's citizens demands action.

Four Dutch nationals who were making a film on gay rights were recently arrested and interrogated by authorities for "promoting homosexual propaganda," which is the first known instance of the new law being implemented.

We've had quite a debate around here the other day about the frightening prospect of people marrying donkeys, dogs laying with cats, and all that apocalyptic stuff that obviously scares the shit out of some people. Well, some in the audience might've felt shocked and appalled by some of the responses, and they may have found themselves scratching their heads in dismay, wondering where did all that homophobia suddenly come from in some particular societies.

So let's try to put this into perspective, and maybe we could take a step slightly closer to the answer.

At the end of May, the deputy director of the regional airport in the Kamchatka peninsula in the Russian Far East was attacked by unidentified individuals and fatally stabbed multiple times. The local police started an investigation, their primary version about the motivations for the assault being the "non-traditional sexual orientation" of the 38 year old man. Just a few weeks earlier, a similar case had happened in Volgograd, where a 23 year old man was tortured and brutally murdered because of his sexual orientation. Now, the LGBT community is blaming this alarming trend on Russian politics and Russian politicians (among other things). And indeed, things have been moving into an awkward direction for quite a while, as far as gay rights in Russia are concerned - the "advocating in favor of the gay threat" now being officially a crime, and hatred for gays and lesbians being encouraged among the general populace by the very people of power themselves.

The most recent example )
[identity profile] luvdovz.livejournal.com
http://sdgln.com/news/2012/12/19/lgbt-russians-protest-gay-propaganda-law-attacked-arrested

It's a fact now. A law that used to be in place only in St. Petersburg and a few other Russian towns, is already federal law. It's the law banning "propaganda" of homosexuality in the presence of minors. The measure has caused a storm of protests from the human rights circles, but those protests are now being crushed, as seen in the above article.

Of course, Putin has signed the bill into law without a shred of remorse. The other head of the uneven two-headed hydra, Medvedev had his reservations, but he's not the one who's calling the shots. Putin is. And dear leader has now protected Mother Russia from those pesky evil gays. The Russians can sleep well, now that this major threat has been removed.

How did this even happen? )
