The pictures are too numerous to post here, so I'll just post the link.

You gotta see these, though. Some of the most wonderful large-scale decorating and even a picturesque view of a town covered in a perfect blanket of snow:

I'm going to save some of these to my laptop, I like them so much.

Greetings, comrades! We've talked in previous years about May 24, which is a huge holiday for about a quarter billion people around the world, those using the Cyrillic alphabet. While it may seem a bit alien to people in the West who aren't familiar with it, it's actually very similar to the Latin script, because they both emerged from the Greek alphabet (in fact, Cyrillic letters are even closer to Greek than the Latin ones, and even their order in the alphabet is much more similar). Most people in the West associate this alphabet with Russia, I suppose, although it was neither created there nor was it originally spread from there - it's just that Russia is the biggest and most influential Slavonic country at the moment, hence the association (and all the jokes and memes, particularly ones related to the so called Faux Cyrillic). There are some variations of the script varying from country to country, serving the specific phonetic needs of each country, but in general, the basis of the alphabet is shared by all nations who use it.

Anyway; the story behind the creation and adoption of the Cyrillic alphabet has been discussed at great length here, so I'm not going to occupy you with it again. You can read it in more detail under that link and in the links provided there. This is just a short greeting to all folks of Slavonic origin and background, and everyone using or familiar with the Cyrillic alphabet in general, and of course to those appreciating Slavonic culture and tradition. To all: NAZDRAVE / CHEERS!

Anyway, which is the Christmas song that annoys the hell out of you? This could become a long list, but here are just a few:

Mariah Carey – All I Want for Christmas Is You
Wham! - Last Christmas
Paul McCartney - Wonderful Christmastime
New Kids On The Block - Funky Funky Christmas
New Song - The Christmas Shoes
Cliff Richard - Millennium Prayer
Jackson 5 - I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus
Elmo and Patsy - Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer
Gayla Peevey - I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas
Band Aid 20 - Do They Know It's Christmas?

...Do they, though?

To all our Talkpolitics denizens and their families and friends, I wish great holidays, and a much, MUCH happier year 2021. In this extraordinary time, family is more important than ever. And what could be a more "family" holiday than Christmas Eve? So here are a few cool Christmas Eve customs that come to mind.

Trump's personal Fourth of July dictator parade. Let's examine the utter stupid, shall we?

1. Trump is doing this without having confirmed that the bridges in DC can handle the weight of so many tanks. Remember, a single M1 Abrams tank weighs 68 tons. More than most semi trucks, as much as 17 or more passenger cars in a space not much larger than a Chevy Suburban.

MoAR stupid )

I saw the moron child that calls himself "president" on TV this morning, allegedly giving a Christmas message. All he did was talk about his multibillion dollar medieval wall. But the commentators afterwards pointed out that only 37% of the people in the US wanted a wall across their border. Adding the caveat that Mexico will not pay for it, that drops to 33%. And, like a stubborn 3 year old, Trump still wants to build his wall.

As far as walls and borders are concerned, I wouldn't say I'd want a wall if I lived in the US. I'd more likely want effective security, combined with immigration policy, including adherence to the asylum laws already in existence, as well as international asylum laws, including compassionate treatment of refugees. I'd want America, the only home they ever knew, to be a safe home for the DACA people.

That sound OK with you? Or is it too much that I expect?

Yeah. It's that time of the year again. It's funny how the right labels things. War on every other religion but call it War on Christmas so they can claim the victim for starting shit.

Now they're starting to call themselves 'classical liberals' which basically tries to reclaim the title 'liberal' in an attempt to draw in independents. Doesn't help that Republicans used abortion as a way to get Christians votes. It started in the 80's with James Dobson and Pat Robinson influencing preachers to declare to their congregations that if they don't vote for anti-abortion Republicans then they're bad Christians.

Republicans have been using these tactics to gain support for the horrible corporate agenda.?

Last year it looked like someone puked on Narnia....this year looks like a tribute to Putin and Russia...

"In this minute-long Christmas-decor trailer the White House released Monday morning, you can see Melania walk through a forest of blood red trees, show off a bowl of artichokes, gaze at a confusing wreath made of "Be Best" pencils and trim the tree with a "Be Best" ornament."

Melania's White House Christmas decorations are up, and there are blood red trees

They seem to have scaled back the "hell on Earth" vibes from last year, but there's still a great deal to question.
Looks a little satanic to me!

Hilarity ensue..... )

Hello, my bored geeks history junkies! There are dates and events in history which serve as a lesson and give precious examples that could be emulated throughout the ages. It's those events that often keep a nation going in hard times - it's enough to recall them and you can feel part of a greater good, and have new inspiration. Today is one such date for my country. See, I live in a tiny Balkan country with enormous and turbulent history, a country that's now only a shadow of what it used to be before, many many centuries ago. But the memory remains and it's probably what keeps my people going, despite the immense troubles we've gone through.
