The issue of politics and social sciences is certainly a curious blend, but there is one area where the two intersected that is of obvious relevance in any age when homophobia in all its forms is a major political issue.
cut for size )

It is this last view that I hold, Mental illnesses certainly do exist, but some of them have existed primarily for political reasons. This illustrates more the potential pitfalls of psychiatry than an actual judgment on the science as a whole.

Peace, my dear chronic haterz nice tolerant peeps who just want harmony in the world! Care to take a glimpse of the "nice" place that is the Balkan Internet, eh? In this case it's this legendary cesspit that is Blog.bg. See, there's a Pride Parade today in Sofia, which is a pretty big event. And of course that's been the central topic throughout the blogosphere for the whole week. I've been puking all over the place lately, as I've realized that the majority of bloggers are pretty much on the homophobic side of the issue. Just one among thousands of examples:

http://stoineff.blog.bg/lifestyle/2012/06/26/shte-hodite-li-na-gei-parada.972660

Rough translation:

"This year Warlick [the US ambassador to BG] will be attending the gay pride parade in Sofia. You know, we're supposed to be tolerant with them f**s. To protect their rights and freedoms. To help them keep parading with their wickedness and allow them to keep touching themselves on the wrong holes. Bulgarian f**s unite, hah! We're tolerant and we support y'all; if next year you decide to adopt kids and marry each other, we'll support you again. As the song goes, "...your heart is as wide as the ass of a f**. Brb, gonna vomit now".

The author of this genius post even used this pic, with the comment: "They probably use these toilet brushes to wash their asses afterwards..."

But in fact the truly sickening thing here is all the hatred )

Every mention of the name Castro always stirs the spirits in the US - probably more than the subject about gays and lesbians, and certainly even more than the name Obama. And it was these days that a special Castro visited the United States. Mariela Castro, the daughter of the Cuban leader Raul Castro. She participated at a conference in San Francisco where in her speech she defended the equal rights of homosexuals, which is quite timely, given president Obama's recent statement about his stance on the issue. "As a citizen of the world, I would like him to win", she also said about Obama. Which of course confirms that Obama is a communist! =)

In fact, Fidel's niece is a sexologist, and is among the leaders of a movement whose mission is to break all taboos on the "Island of Freedom". And this is no easy task, given the conservative character of the Cuban society. She is 50 years old, she was born 3 years after the Revolution, when sexual freedom in Cuba was non-existent. Her uncle's rebels believed that the labour camps were the only proper place for gays and lesbians. The leadership of the communist party considered the homosexuals to be deluded and useless - as much as the Catholic priests and political dissidents. Those were the times of what could be called Machism-Leninism. "That was a big mistake", Mariela Castro now says. Unlike the rest of her family, she often gives interviews and uses Twitter and Facebook. In a country where cell phones had been banned until very recently. A modern lady indeed.

Following the example of St. Petersburg, now other big Russian cities are preparing to adopt a new law that is set to impose fines for those who openly discuss homosexuality, let alone those who practice it. The state Duma is about to pass a federal law against "homosexual propaganda" that'll now be valid throughout the whole country. And that's happening in the 21st century.

The democratically leaning people and the civil rights advocates in Russia are in shock. In the future, whoever dares to even speak openly about issues of homosexuality would be considered a criminal. Until now St. Petersburg, probably the most popular tourist destination in Russia, used to have a watered-down law against "homosexual propaganda", under the pretense of protecting the children and youngsters (that's the official statement under the law: i.e. THINK ABOUT THE CHILDREN!). But now the federal parliament will impose a more extreme version of that law on the whole territory of the Russian Federation. If the bill is passed, there will be fines for anyone performing informative campaigns about the various sexual orientations. Of course, apart from the many discriminatory implications from this law, a side effect that shouldn't be underestimated is that it would additionally complicate the HIV/AIDS prevention. But the authorities wouldn't hear about it. "Public decency" and "morality" trumps all these considerations.

http://motherjones.com/mixed-media/2012/01/sweden-still-forcing-sterilization

Little known fact about Sweden, that supposed bastion of liberal idealism: If a Swedish transgender person wants to legally update their gender on official ID papers, a 1972 law requires them to get both divorced and sterilized first.

Sweden is considered extremely gay-friendly, with one of the highest rates of popular support for same-sex marriage, and more than half the population supports gay adoption. Arguing that the current law is both unpopular and abusive, the country's moderate and liberal parties want to see it repealed. In response, the small but powerful Christian Democrat party formed a coalition with other right-of-center parties to join in upholding the requirement for sterilization. End result: a proposal for new legislation that allows trans—a preferred term for many people who undergo gender reassignment—to be married but continues to force them to be sterilized.

Okay, WTF, Sweden? Now I get that the people who are fighting to keep this one the books are in the minority. But it's pretty amazing this wasn't struck down years ago. Is this a well known law? And how long until this is used as fodder for Law & Order: Sweden?

I like that the article contrasts this to the forced sterilizations that happen in the US. It's odd how contries can go such different ways on this sort of thing. As messed up things can get with gay right in the US a law like this would have been given the boot ages ago.

Here is an interview by our local public broadcasters with Gene Robinson. He was at the Pride Parade today in a contingent just in front of ours and I did not even know it. It is great that he was able to join us this year.

Here is an image of the bishop in full regalia from getreligion.org:

Bishop Gene Robinson

The parade was the best one ever for me. On the way out here, there was a group of teenagers celebrating on the subway. One of them said that it is as good as Christmas. Another passenger remarked that it is better than Christmas. Here are some young folks enjoying the parade last year: Erotic art under the cut. )
What do you think of the schism in the Anglican communion over the ordination of Gene Robinson?

Happy Pride Day!

Family Guy an animated television series on Fox aired an extremely transphobic episode on Mother's Day. The episode called "Quagmire's Dad" was about a big life change for his father, a recognized Navy war hero veteran. The episode is filled with homophobic and transphobic language and judgment.

My personal opinion is that satire is acceptable and political incorrectness can sometimes be funny. This in my humble opinion was over the top and creates a society that allows for fear and panic of transgender individuals. Please weigh in with your thoughts on the article and the video episode?

Evidently while the rule is "Don't Ask Don't Tell" this is one case among many where the Right Wing honors rules in the breach as opposed to the observance. It's perfectly kosher for the police to blab about somebody's record and ensure she's fired when she abided by military segregation. Because expecting those who bray loudest like the jackasses they are to believe in enforcing rules when *they* have to abide by them is a lost cause. What has happened to this woman, who abided by military rules and regulations is both shameful, will be upheld as many other shameful incidents have been, and I expect this post will receive an abundance of comments defending the indefensible when GLBTQ are victims.

I agree with Bill O'Reilly:

The video linked to has Bill O'Reilly calling out a Catholic school excluding elementary school students because their parents were lesbians. What's the world coming to when an old sourpuss like me can't find anything to critique this guy on on an issue like this?
