Germany took a long and hard look at starting two continental wars in fifty years, losing both of them in spite of pouring out blood like water in failed bids for continental empires, and uniquely among societies other than Japan, likewise strongarmed into this by losing a big war it started, decided to accept atrocities as that and move past them.
German assertiveness when it was real led to out of control generals willfully dragging their society into abysses of their own making because the Germans willfully accepted a society where there wasn't even a pretense, let alone a tradition that generals and marshals obeyed civilian politicians.
For 2,000 years Europeans slaughtered Jews on multiple occasions for every possible imagined crime up to literally drinking the blood of Christian children in one of the most horrific lies in the long, terrible list of willful lies. No matter what Jews did, separating themselves or assimilating, their Christian neighbors regularly turned into savages to rival the armies of Genghis Khan or Tamerlane. The Jews of Germany were the most culturally assimilated Jewish population in Europe and yet it was Germany that turned into THAT in that picture in retaliation to the most inoffensive and integrated group in Europe.
Why should Europe be condemned for looking at two disasters without parallel in succession in history and rightly not trying for a third?
Whatever the faults of the universal ideals of freedom, liberty, equality, and the universal brotherhood and sisterhood of all mankind, couldn't there be and shouldn't there be a better way? And not the endless atrocities of empires, of which the American is but the latest and grandest in scale, crossing all the seven seas and seven continents and able to rain death with weaponry literally out of science fiction?
Is this what all the centuries of striving for a common humanity from the Revolution of 1792 to now have led to? Ditching them at a grave crisis to leap back into the failures and oscillating tyrants and strongmen of yesteryear?
Should we condemn growing beyond the savage and gruesome methods our ancestors took for granted and that lead people who've lost their homes to a civil war where the very states that condemn them (looking hard at YOU MY OWN COUNTRY AND FRANCE) bomb them and then wonder why they're fleeing in the first place?
I say not. Europeans evolved, Europeans learned. The Russians haven't, because their society is an army with a country, and the USA forgot that it once hated soldiers to cheer every time a multi-million dollar bomb blows up a shepherd and his wives. I don't want the last, best hope of Western civilization to wither on the vine when it has the chance to remain the redemption of the good within the Western bloodbath and to keep the ideals alive. The world without them has all the same problems but is starker and crueler and colder in ways to meet them.
