I have to admit I've got a lot of egg on my face. I'm going to ask htpcl 's possum to lick it off me. Have any of the rest of the folk on here got things that upon reflection, or with subsequent information, wished they hadn't written; or positions they wish they hadn't backed?

That's all of us. I was thinking more of individual examples of impaired judgement, like the above.

I'm often as wryly amused by my own mistakes as I am by other people's. But this is all about sharing. You may rightly think that these things can lead to too much information, so I shall defer to your generalisation.

Embarrassing love affairs we can all do. Mistaking one person for another, maybe. Standing up and defending the indefensible, or advocating something that subsequently turns out to be....um....wrong in essence, even if not in strict legalistic interpretation.

Retired musician (played with folk of whom you will have heard); not yet (but almost) 50; small independent income; clever, beautiful (and pregnant) wife; enough money to send the little blighter(s) to Winchester, should it (and/or any subsequent ones) be a he; reasonable health (fingers crossed); very well connected socially; about to move to a bigger house. Not much, but some work in the back catalogue of which I'm not ashamed.

Of course it could all end tomorrow, but I rather hope it doesn't. Being an idle socialite rather suits me.

We defend our points based on the information that we got, and when sifted through the prism of our perceptions and convictions. That's not wrong.

The question is how prepared we are to accept the possibility that there could be other facts out there that could possibly shed more light on the matter we're discussing, and if we're someone who's ready to make amendments in our position when faced with those facts. Or instead, are we perhaps someone who'd rather just cement their position further out of sheer stubbornness.

The very fact that you've put this issue for discussion shows which of the two you are.
