Best of the Worst

Using census and health data some folks have ranked the 50 states on the thing that they are worst at. It makes for fun if slightly sad reading. Some highlights:
California: worst air pollution. (No shock there)
Maine: dumbest state (Go, the South, go! No child left behind!)
Texas: high school graduation (As someone who has worked in education in Texas this is no surprise to me)
Maryland: AIDS
It's no news that there are problems everywhere. But seeing that Michigan is #1 in unemployment is no surprise and a sad comment on the dangers of building a state's economy on one industry. My home state of Indiana is the "least green" state which is not good for a place trying to reinvent itself as a biotech hub. If nothing else it could be seen as a strong indicator of what local and state governments should be focusing on.

Mississippi: ranks last in the most number of categories. These include highest rate of child poverty (31.9 percent), highest rate of infant mortality (10.3 percent) lowest median household income ($35,078), highest teen birth rate (71.9 per 1,000 women aged 15 to 19) and highest overall rate of STDs.

Date: 26/1/11 19:38 (UTC)I wonder how I missed that?
Maybe it's because the tiny, itsy bitsy ant squished on my U.S. map covered it all up?
You're talking to a Florida Boy. Anything less than a couple of hundred and ya might as well be land locked.

Meanwhile, I am planning to be out of the state before my kids start school :-)

Date: 26/1/11 21:43 (UTC)California unemployment rate is second highest in nation: The state's 12.5% jobless rate in December ranks only behind Nevada's 14.5% rate, the Bureau of Labor Statistics says. The Golden State trades places with Michigan, which is now No. 3. (http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-0126-california-unemployment-20110126,0,6206458.story)
The article is dated today.
Besides that, pretty much throughout the midterm elections, pundits often cited Nevada as having the worst national unemployment when discussing the race between Angle & Reid. I guess two months ago is too far back in the national consciousness.

Date: 26/1/11 22:38 (UTC)Why? Because only the people with plum jobs can afford it. I'm lucky I've got health insurance. If I worked for a small business in this state I'd be fucked up the ass with no lube. I MIGHT get health insurance if I gave up half of my salary.
And then there are the doctor costs. For instance, I rocked up to one of those storefront clinics that are supposed to be so cheap last month and what do I get told? $120 to get looked at. $60 for antibiotics if needed. And that's the minimum folks. For a 20-minute poke-and-prod.
No fucking shit we're the most sickly.
