“The Germans said enough about the Jews and people believed it--believed it and you have the Holocaust.  We heard on this floor, government takeover of health care.  Politifact said the biggest lie of 2010 was a government takeover of health care because there is no government takeover," Cohen said.

Cohen made his comments late last night, but they have attracted no attention because his speech was made to a virtually empty House chamber with no reporters around to watch.'

ROFLMAO, no. Germans didn't like the pogroms of 1934 and 1938. The Holocaust isn't generally considered to have begun by scholars until after the Wannsee Conference in 1942 ya dope. In fact Hitler's goons overdid their hatred to the point that German leaders like Wilhelm Canaris were against the regime from the first days of the war. And in any case hyperbole about a government takeover that in fact is no such thing is not equivalent to the murder of 6,000,000 specifically targeted due to ethnic background. I believe Mark Twain said it best "suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress. Ah, but I repeat myself."

And yes, Republicans will present the Pelosi-Reid bill as UHC regardless of whether or not it really is that or not. That's politics 101. The usual response is to have counter-propaganda that sensible. But again, Twain was right.......

I don't understand how such idiots get elected. I suppose it has to do with the electorate.

I hate it when I'm "right" (whatever that means). It means something is really wrong. Like, shit-wrong (as in: "SHIT! There's something WRONG here!").

It's so much easier to be wrong but pretend that you're right. Damn I'm confused.

Future historians will refer to this as the Jerseyshorification of America.

well, it's bad hyperbole. I suppose the point he's trying to make is that if you tell a lie enough, people will believe the lie.

Bad example, tho. He should have used things like the UAC.

Republicans are claiming to already be improving the economy - but if I'm not mistaken, all they've done so far is read the Constitution aloud.

It won't even get to be voted on in the Senate. The big pharma lobby, the medical lobby, and the insurance lobby realize there are big profits to be made with Obama's health care reform; they're all on board now.

As a symbolic gesture, I think it would have had more effect if they had named it "Repeal of Barry Soetero's Kenyan Commie Job-Killing Health Care Bill".

I agree that it's imprudent to make such a comparison to the Germans but noting that the Germans used a certain methodology to accomplish a certain goal is not at all like saying that X is just as bad as killing 6000000. To suggest that that's what he's doing is also hyperbole.

Why would you think that I was claiming it was a GOP vs. Democrat thing? My point is that if I note that A used method of type Y to accomplish Z, it doesn't follow that when I contend that B is also using a method of type Y that I'm claiming that what they're trying to accomplish with it is on the same moral scale as Z. Just because someone references the Nazis, you don't get to say "Godwin" and stop doing any kind of critical analysis.

Cohen is just another great example of the dangerous rhetoric we are trying to tone down.

That was fun to say! Mmm maybe I could be a liberal.
