Agreed, different groups are quite possibly targeted by different means.
The poor in America go to worse schools and find it harder to do things like pay for college.
Hmmm..... wouldn't you say that paying for college is not so much an issue (due to federal grants) as is getting accepted into an institution-of-higher-learning? After all, one can apply to as many Universities as his/her heart desires. But, failure to meet pre-requisites will turn every application into pure vanity, no?
Hmmm....so, maybe it's best to join the workforce firstly & be sure to choose an employer with an Educational Reimbursement Plan (http://www.allbusiness.com/human-resources/employee-development/1163-1.html). Perhaps that would work?
Paying for college is a big issue. If you're going to a public college, they will figure that you need an incredibly small amount to live on and will subsidize that amount. If you're in a place with a high cost of living, you're in trouble. Also, if you get a job to cover your expenses, you end up getting less money the next year... you have an income after all.
Also, working full time and competing with people who don't need to work during the school year is a bit of a handicap.
Regarding Cost-of-Living... If a "poor person" gets accepted to a University, is subsidized only a small amount in an HIGH cost-o-living area, then he/she will have to rent out a living-room to share with another student as do sooooooooooooooo many others.
Maybe this is why the Asian community has done so well at climbing the ranks of the UC (http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/aboutuc/) system. They are willing to live like a "poor man" during college in order to NOT live like one afterward. ???
