In what ways are poor people oppressed?

Regarding Cost-of-Living... If a "poor person" gets accepted to a University, is subsidized only a small amount in an HIGH cost-o-living area, then he/she will have to rent out a living-room to share with another student as do sooooooooooooooo many others.

Maybe this is why the Asian community has done so well at climbing the ranks of the UC (http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/aboutuc/) system. They are willing to live like a "poor man" during college in order to NOT live like one afterward. ???
