(Mind you, you can have right wing parties that are not populist, as Les Republicains in France. At the same time you can have populist left wing parties, as Podemos in Spain).
There is evidently a dichotomous relationship between the extreme right and the idea of Brexit. On one hand it appears that petty nationalism has triumphed, but on another it appears it is not necessarily because of extreme right-wing sympathies. This chimes in with the way that some of the left of the Labour party have been in favour of Brexit.
But also it must be said that in the UK the ordinary right takes away the oxygen from extreme right.
In the West, Iceland, Spain and Portugal also seem to be able to be patriotic without even inclining, never mind lurching, towards fascism. In the former Balkan states Albania, Bosnia, Croatia, and Kosovo, and on the Eastern side Romania, Moldova, and Belarus all seem immune to the lure of the extreme right.
If I were Steve Bannon, I'd be looking to find out what, if any, are the common traits of the cultures of those nations which lead them to reject the extreme right. Weirdly enough folk like me will be doing the same; just from a different point-of-view.
