Yeah. In a one-night stand, the US has hit some targets in Syria last night, but they hit mostly meaningless sites that had been emptied of most Syrian equipment, which was withdrawn into the safety of the Russian bases - the US had warned Russia of the strike, and assured them it wouldn't hit their bases. No reaction is expected from Russia, save for a few angry letters at the UN. What a nice PR stunt, eh? This'll totally teach Assad!

Of course, Trump is saying no single option for response to Assad's purported chemical attack in Duma (if it was him at all) is off the table. We all know the possible options of course. The sabre-rattling has increased in recent days, warships coming and going around the whole area in preparation for military action, and the US, UK and France dancing around the idea of starting a massive attack on Syria. And not just a symbolic air strike like this one. Back then, Trump just wanted to show he's not Putin's puppet, but without stepping too far across the line - so he informed Russia of the strike in advance, and the Russians in turn warned Assad. This time it'll be different, they say.

In his typical rhetorical style, Trump vowed that Assad's allies would "pay a steep price", apparently meaning Russia and Iran. It's likely that Iran is the real target here, because it's long been a thorn in America's ass, and is a marked target. The air bridge between Iran and Syria will have to be disrupted, if the strike is to have any effect. This corridor partially passes through Iraqi territory, so that's where the US could start.

As for Russia... )
