Well, back in the day when Adolf Hitler was dreaming of world conquest by the fascist powers, it was claimed the Britain and the USA had a 'special relationship'.
The fact was that the USA sent out the ships, the fleets of bomber planes and fighters, not to mention the millions of men who liberated Europe. And let's remember that many of them never came back.
But let us also not forget that it was Great Britain that proved to be the "unsinkable aircraft carrier" that was moored right off the mainland coast; Britain proved to be a refuge for many fleeing Nazi occupation. Britain was a bastion against Nazism, a beacon of hope to the occupied nations, as well as the springboard from which America launched the invasion of Normandy. Yeah, Roosevelt and Churchill did ok, between them, and when Communist Russia took over the role of 'Bad Guy' from Nazi Germany, it was again an Anglo American alliance that proved to be the backbone behind NATO and the victory of democracy over totalitarianism.
But what now when Communism has been idealogically defeated? Is the special relationship still going? If it's over, is it such a bad thing? Me, as a Brit, I think the answer is 'yes, its over - but this may be a blessing in disguise'. ( Read more... )
