Cruz' douchebag-ey remarks about "New York values" aside (for the record, he's an asshole), it now seems The Donald is trying to troll Ted hard. There's this old trope about birth certificates, not being American enough, etc, that he has pulled out of the closet once more. It never gets old, does it?

Here's the thing. Ted Cruz was born in Canada, and was automatically granted US citizenship because his mother is a US citizen. Most interpretations of "Natural born citizen" are focused on whether a person is entitled to citizenry at birth, not at the place of birth.

So Trump is using that vagueness in the interpretation to plant doubt in the minds of the electorate about Ted's chances to run for prez, and cause a concern that the Democratic rival (Hillary, most likely) would use that to hurt Ted's campaign. Smart move indeed. Worn-out, but smart. Because it works flawlessly every single time it's used - like the last time. ;-)

My opinion is that ultimately, it wouldn't matter if he is or isn't US citizen, legally speaking. If it comes down to it, the Supreme Court will rule that he is, because they don't want to be in the business of disqualifying democratically elected presidents. They may find some way to avoid answering the constitutional question, but there's no way the Supreme Court would dare to disqualify Cruz if he gets elected.

Anyway, here's a poll for ya.

If only presidential candidates could be disqualified on the grounds of being horrible evil human beings...

As Colbert has said, the fact that Cruz has refused to apologise for insulting Trump with that New York thing, is proof that he is not Canadian. :-)

I don't see how he's eligible myself, but if the birther nonsense taught us anything, it's that courts will never grant anyone standing to challenge it anyway.

The only way I can see that making it to the Supreme Court is if Mr. Cruz is removed from the ballot from a state because he is not deemed to be a Natural Born Citizen. Since such a decision would be made by an Attorney General, Secretary of State, or some election board, all of whom are political creatures, and it'd be effectively giving the state to Mr. Trump, I don't see this happening this time.

It seems like a rather silly requirement to me. If someone's been here nearly their entire lives, they should be eligible for President. I moved here when I was 2 from the Soviet Union, causing me to lose my 'natural born' citizenship there. So I only have citizenship in USA, but I can never run for President! Even though I haven't left the country since I was 2! So yeah.

I don't think Canada wants to claim him.

It's pretty interesting that even after literal centuries of it being a question (there have been citizenship eligibility challenges since the 1800s,) there really still has never been any definitive legal ruling on the subject, only opinions from lower courts that have only applied to specific claims at specific times. Ultimately, the Constitution's vague wording (and refusal to define what it means by "Natural-born Citizen") means that this debate isn't going away anytime soon.

As for Ted Cruz's eligibility, if he had citizenship at birth (and was not later "naturalized,") then I see him as "natural-born," regardless of where he was born and whether or not he also had dual-citizenship. That's just my opinion, though, and I do understand the arguments against that interpretation.
