How is Israel in the West Bank different in any way from the Soviet policy back in the Soviet era of settling Russians in non-Russophone territory or the Chinese Sinicizations of Tibet and Uighurstan?
It's a simple question, which will no doubt product convoluted and complex answers.

Date: 27/7/09 20:34 (UTC)Anyhow, it seems to be the biggest problem with Palestinians vs Israelis is...
1.) They hate each other.
2.) They are neighbors.
The obvious and likely effective solution is the tried and true grade school method -- separate the brawling children and keep them far enough apart to avoid conflict. Anything else seems doomed to failure.
In the long run it would probably be cheaper to relocate ALL of the Palestinians to Greenland or someplace, than it will be to solve these issues with any lesser committed approach..

Date: 27/7/09 20:46 (UTC)The Arabs have the dumbest political leaders of any ethnic group around. What the Hell possessed them to expel the Mizrachi to Israel? It soured the memory of the Mizrachi of their former home, strengthened Israel immensely, and gave the Israelis the excuse that they can say a legitimate population excuse happened.

To really get a clear picture requires that someone take into account history not only back to the 1960's or the last Gaza war, I think maybe they would have to go back centuries or milennia to avoid myopia..

Date: 27/7/09 20:44 (UTC)There isn't a fart's worth of difference. I don't see how Israel's going to be called on it, either, when the decline and fall of the USSR has left millions of Russians in the former SSRs.

Date: 28/7/09 11:37 (UTC)Tibetans have an entirely different languages. Uighurs are Turkic. Very different cultures. Tibetans also have a different sect of Buddhism from what the CCP grudgingly allows. Uighurs are Moslem. And to judge by the violence in both regions on a regular basis, it sure doesn't seem like they found Maoism very civilizing (though at least in Tibet's case about the same number of people died as would have under the living god despot).
