Three days before 20-year-old Adam Lanza killed his mother, then opened fire on a classroom full of Connecticut kindergartners, my 13-year-old son Michael (name changed) missed his bus because he was wearing the wrong color pants. "I can wear these pants," he said, his tone increasingly belligerent, the black-hole pupils of his eyes swallowing the blue irises. "They are navy blue," I told him. "Your school's dress code says black or khaki pants only."
"They told me I could wear these," he insisted. "You're a stupid bitch. I can wear whatever pants I want to. This is America. I have rights!"
"You can't wear whatever pants you want to," I said, my tone affable, reasonable. "And you definitely cannot call me a stupid bitch. You're grounded from electronics for the rest of the day. Now get in the car, and I will take you to school."
I live with a son who is mentally ill. I love my son. But he terrifies me.
I am sharing this story because I am Adam Lanza's mother. I am Dylan Klebold's and Eric Harris's mother. I am Jason Holmes's mother. I am Jared Loughner's mother. I am Seung-Hui Cho's mother. And these boys—and their mothers—need help. In the wake of another horrific national tragedy, it's easy to talk about guns. But it's time to talk about mental illness.

We always hear the same questions - and accusations - when a tragedy like this happens. We wonder why no one saw it coming. If you've ever had a family member in your house who frightens you (and I have), you can empathize with the woman who wrote this article.

Simple question: Where did he get all these guns?

his mother was, allegedly, a member of a doomsday cult, and collected guns.

Did some reading, didn't say doomsday cult, but was a gun enthusiast and "survivalist" who turned their home in to a bunker and stockpiled weapons out of fear of economic crash. Apparently she also repeatedly took the kid out of school because she didn't like how they were teaching him.

Funny, the dad of the 2009 German mass shooting was a member of a marksman's club and had like 15+ guns. He was charged with manslaughter.

I made the same connection. It makes talking about changing gun laws particularly inappropriate: in both instances, the perpetrators stole the guns from a family member who used them responsibly. Ridiculously, in my opinion, the father in the Winnenden shooting was charged because he failed to lock away the one gun his son was able to steal

Then there's the whole shooting your own mother in the face angle.

someone who is that fucked in the haed would probably (in the absense of guns knives or pointed sticks) simply settled for setting aptartment complexes of fire after putting chains & padlocks on the exits.

Maybe.

Another possibility is that in the absence of guns, he would've just hung himself and killed no one.

Or stabbed everyone (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/china/9744671/Knife-wielding-man-goes-on-rampage-in-Chinese-school.html). My point is just that the guns were owned by people who used them relatively responsibly but were stolen, making gun laws pretty hard to write effectively.

Well, I wasn't responding to your point, just this weird one about how guns apparently don't make these types of acts easier. Being able to just point the gun at your head at the end of it all without getting caught, not to mention being able to make victims without having to get too close to them is pretty convenient. I believe there's a lot of people like Adam Lanza, but they don't have the firearms lying around the house.

On the other hand these acts seem more and more about how notoriously you are able to leave this world, and nobody makes worldwide headlines for just offing ones self.

Maybe, but then shooting guns has an emotional impact that setting fires doesn't. I've never spent a Saturday afternoon stabbing cans in the back yard for example. I try not to play armchair psychiatrist, but I certainly expect that the part about shooting a gun has some appeal to someone who feels angry and powerless.

Exact same day someone went on a school stabbing spree. (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/china/9744671/Knife-wielding-man-goes-on-rampage-in-Chinese-school.html) The results might be less deadly, but the fundamental problem isn't the weapon of choice.

Yes, but Americans like to enact measures that make them feelsafer. We think with our emotions and not with our heads in this country.

Responsibly would have been to have the guns locked away where her son with behavioural issues couldn't access them.

Having an adult steal something from you does not make you irresponsible. That's like saying the school would have only been acting responsibly if they had made it impossible for a local man with behavioral issues to force his way in.

This wasn't a little kid fooling around and picking up daddy's gun. This was an adult willfully stealing weapons from his mother so that he could kill her and go on a shooting spree.

All talk of mental illness being a crutch/bootstraps and beating children is supposed to make them behave better.

Well, I do wonder what became of mentally ill children back in the day when parents were several times stricter and deviance of any kind wasn't tolerated.

I was just thinking the same thing. Personality disorder, integration problems, mental illness and the like are hardly mentioned by the media as the problem to "take a national stand on and change". They go on about guns instead, partly because theres a lobby for it I think even though, logically it seems silly because of the whole being under the control of a killer thing. In someone elses hands those weapons would not have done that and might have even protected someone. But instead it seems like fake liberals
rail against gun culture, blaming people who arent responsible in a weird zig zag of
the familiar victim blaming of fundamentalist rape assessment.

I said fake liberals. As in the kind who pretend to be anti-war but
turn a blind eye to Barry's drone war or even the continued abuse
of the drug war so they can fap to him.

Actually I think of it more as guilt by failing to act in light of obvious
wrong. Of course there's an agenda behind it which is the reason for its
continuance

To be honest, I think that no small part of the failure in treating mental health is due to the political party/ideology that says the sciences dedicated to treating said conditions are not sciences and which did things like closing all the mental health facilities. Actions have consequences, after all. So do ideas.

DAILY QUOTE:
"The NATO charter clearly says that any attack on a NATO member shall be treated, by all members, as an attack against all. So that means that, if we attack Greenland, we'll be obligated to go to war against ... ourselves! Gee, that's scary. You really don't want to go to war with the United States. They're insane!"
