Yes, I am being convinced that there are regional concerns I've been ignoring here.

We brought in the compulsory vote in the 20s, when the Labor movement was very strong and most of the population were working class. Compulsory voting helped to ensure that the capitalists couldn't restrict the ability of workers to vote. Now we've all just grown up with it and to think of it being otherwise is absurd.
