FIFA World Cup set to introduce Super Bowl style half-time show

"FIFA President Gianni Infantino has announced that the 2026 World Cup final will have a halftime show, similar to that seen at the Super Bowl. The next edition of the World Cup will be hosted by the USA, Canada and Mexico."

Also please introduce 5 minute commercial breaks between set pieces. Then we can all move on from football and watch rugby, thanks.

Sorry to bother you again with this topic, but the world is Olympics currently in case you hadn't already noticed =)

The Internet is a strange place, once people decide that something is worth their attention, it tends to grow as an avalanche and becomes "viral" as they call it. These Olympics have been no exception, providing lots of ammo for meme-makers.

Here is one list, out of many: LINK

Not necessarily the best Olympic-related memes are included, I'm sure you could come up with many more. Personally (apart from that Turkish pistol shooter that we talked about last week), I find this recent one most amusing:

You must have heard of AIBA/ IBA (International Boxing Association), the scandals and why they are banned from the Olympics. Here's the chronology.

So it all begun when it became apparent they had fixed matches in both the 2016 Rio games, and the 2012 games in London.

Integrity Clearly at Issue Within the IOC and the AIBA

This was too much even for corrupt organizations such as the IOC. Add to that that AIBA was in deep financial trouble at the time. So IOC suspended them for the Tokyo games in 2021, and instead had the boxing events been run by IOC itself. So you'd think things would get better now, they were punished for their previous actions, the old leadership was sacked, and everything would get better enough for them to participate again, right? Oh, no, this story was just beginning.

So who took over the AIBA (now called IBA)? Well Uzbek heroin smuggler and crime boss Gafur Rakhimov of course! So now they were led by a criminal.

Can An Alleged Uzbek Crime Boss, Heroin Trafficker Save Olympic Boxing?

And it got worse )

Love this guy. Turkish shooter Yusuf Dikec has become an overnight internet sensation following his silver medal win at the Paris Olympics. In the air pistol mixed team competition, Dikec amazed everyone by competing with everyday glasses and one hand in his pocket, eschewing specialized equipment. His unique approach and confident demeanor, especially at the age of 51, have sparked widespread admiration and a social media meme fest.

Yeah, the time has come. The Olympics have begun!

Which sports are you gonna watch? Which are your favorites?

What's your prediction for the medals winner country?

Also, which sports do you think should NOT be there and which of the ones that aren't should've been?

Hey, my beloved procrastinators! It's been quite a while since we had our last installment of ridiculously over-simplified and unbearably polarized hypothetical situations, inspired by the NationStates online game - you know, that place where you're the benevolent ruler of your own fictional state, which you're completely free to shape as you please, based on the stupid choices you make in situations like the below presented.

The Issue

The Insert Country Name College Sports Association has a long-standing policy that collegiate athletes do not get paid. Several high-profile players have taken to camping out in the student loan office until their grievances are addressed.

Oh the hypocrisy. You get out of your way to ban beer, scanty clothing etc at the World Cup stands (yeah I'm talking of the FIFA World Cup, which one did you think I was talking about?) - and then you salivate after some Croatian chick's nice ass and stunning tits:

Qatari fans caught ogling World Cup 2022's 'sexiest fan' despite 'disapproval' claims

Qatari supporters in the stands for Croatia's World Cup clash with Morocco appeared to be taking photos of Ivana Knoll, who was wearing skimpy clothes that go against the country's strict modesty laws

Bunch of hypocrites.

Oh, and while we're at it. Germany supported the LGBTQ community by symbolically shutting their mouths before their first game, which they lost, and got mocked for it by the Qataris. "Where are you now, Germany"? Okay, where are you, Qatar? Your team barely even crossed the midfield line throughout the whole tournament. You know, the tournament you spent billions of bucks buying, and then hosting.

Sorry, I'm just rambling. Better watch the games, cuz tonight's promising more drama on the field :-)

FIFA World Cup topic again. Sorry. But this isn't so much about the game itself, as it is about the Japanese culture.

Not only was the Japanese team impressive against Germany, but their fans really made my day after the game. See for yourselves:

Now, supporters of the Samurai Blue are earning praise in Qatar for an off-pitch tradition that appears to be uniquely Japanese: Cleaning up stadiums after other football fans have left.

Hats down to the Japanese for being so awesome!

FIFA on Qatar World Cup: Nations told to stick to football, not politics

Stick to football, you say? Hmmm, interesting. Very interesting.

So you take a bag of money and start handing it out so that everyone can approve your shenanigans. The whole story is that you want to line up your image with that of the attractive countries by hosting a giant sports forum where you can push your wholesale propaganda. You've got the money, so why not?

Yes, you sure want to polish your image, to appear tolerant, peaceful, modern, contemporary. What better way to do that by buying off the football world cup? But suuure, this ain't "politics", no way. Or at least according to FIFA it is not. Because everything that happens around these tournaments is not politics according to them.

I watched the Super Bowl yesterday. I remember thinking, it looked like it was mostly only those who worked at the stadium who wore masks.

Not many other people did.

It wasn't just celebrities and politicians.

It was also people in the stands. I didn't see a stadium filled with mask wearing fans.

So I did a search on it, sure enough, the photos I found, mostly those who worked at the stadium were wearing masks. Not many who weren't working there were wearing masks.

What happened to the mask mandate?

I wouldn't condemn only celebrities and politicians. I would condemn everyone who didn't wear a mask.

Everyone should be wearing masks unless they are actually playing the game or performing at half time.

Here is a link to some photos I found.

Here are some photos of fans at a rally in the stadium before the game not one person has a mask on.

Japan is a cute, colourful, anime and manga-inspired wonderland. Obviously. If we're to take BBC's Olympics trailer seriously (which of course we probably shouldn't):

Tokyo Olympics branding adds to stereotypical view of Japan — but that doesn’t make it appropriation"The portrayal of Japan in this trailer raises questions about how Japan is viewed by outsiders and insiders, and what cultural or economic purposes such images serve."

I don't know if the British representation of Japan is a distorted, cliched, stereotypical view of Japan broken through the twisted prism of Western-centric worldview of "orientalism" - I'm aware that two weeks spent in Japan don't make me a Japan expert. The portrayal of Japan in this trailer sure raises questions about how Japan is viewed by outsiders and insiders, and what cultural or economic purposes such images serve. But there's another, bigger problem underlying these Olympics (save for the empty stands on the stadiums which create a somewhat eery feeling about the whole event).

A dozen of Europe's wealthiest football clubs have agreed to create a Superleague, the biggest transformation in the most popular game in many decades. The competition, funded with 6 bn dollars by JPMorgan, is aiming to replace the Champions League, currently the best and most illustrious international football club competition on the continent.

The teams who've confirmed their participation are Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid from Spain, Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham from England, and Juventus, Milan and Inter from Italy. They've also announced that another 3 teams will be joining for the first season, which is planned to commence as soon as possible.
