There are great cuisines and then there are "oh-those-cuisines"... Strange thing is, some of the presumably best cuisines also include things you wouldn't dream eating even in your most horrific nightmares. There are things being put in plates that you wouldn't see even in a Survivor show.

There was a time I used to wonder: so, you're from country X, you go to country Z on vacations, you get to the restaurant, and you order what? Still the same old stuff you eat in country X. WTF. Why wouldn't you want to try some of the local (country Z's) meals?

But then I went to some countries and I tried that, and I found out that could be a preeeetty tricky business...

[Error: unknown template video]

So what are some of the most disgusting things you've ever seen in a plate? Care to share some outrageous recipes, so I could try them at home? ;)

Woah. I just wiki'd that. It says it's a breakfast food:

Nattō can be an acquired taste because of its powerful smell, strong flavor, and slippery texture

What part of that do you want associated with your hangover meal???

Kutti pi is pretty gross. Also Stinkheads.

My paternal family is Icelandic/Jewish so there's a lot of room for scary foods. I've had more than my share of Hákarl.

Yep. My Grandmother still has a penchant the later generations don't for the homeland's traditional foods...

There's nothing better than Icelandic fare one day and then zapiekanka and goulash the next. Latkes and eggs for breakfast. See, on my mom's side, the ancestry is strictly Sami, but the food was more traditional Norwegian. Smoked venison with krumkakes every major holiday, lefse, lutefisk, etc.

Also hotdish. One cannot live in Minnesota without mentioning the crime against nature known simply as the Hotdish.

Must confess. I like ram's testicles with sweet potato (http://www.theworldwidegourmet.com/recipes/rams-testicles-in-honey-sauce-with-sweet-potato-chips/).

I think this technically makes me evil.

Yeah, I've had whale. It was pretty average, I'm not sure why you would eat it if cows are available.

Dunno, but most people would find some of our traditional meals "kinda" gross. Only slightly "kinda". I mean, look at this.

Lamb's brain (there's actually a saying here: "Yummm, brain" = so delicious!

Image

Lamb's tongue.

Image

Pig's intestines (with garlic)

Image

Ducks' hearts.

With our great salads and lots of wine and/or brandy, what could possibly go wrong??

I got the "Complete Edition" book as a Christmas present last year. It's huge. If you dropped it on your foot, you'd break a toe I think. But it's beautifully printed.

The tripe (either cow or pig intestines) soup (with garlic) is my favorite all-time dish that I will eat on any and every day. Veal brain schnitzel and bull's testicles are also excellent, maybe somewhat fancy and rich.

It can take decades for prion disease to come on, so why would people centuries ago have made the link? Modern science, however...

Eating brains is dodgy.

In Up With the Star I've brought things to a Russian invasion of Alaska (with a Partisan Ranger Act, meaning the ATL has wolverines), a Russian invasion of the Raj with General Malinovsky overseeing it, General Georgi Zhukov overseeing yet another Russian strike into south Germany in a joint offensive with General Carl Gustaf Mannerheim (who was an Imperial Russian general so the timetable fits). Against them are US generals such as Nathan Bedford Forrest III and George Patton working side by side with an Imperial German army that sees a lot of the leaders who fought in Nazi armies fighting for the Kaiser instead of the Fuhrer.

Adolf Hitler's in Imperial German politics as leader of the Social Revolutionaries, a party espousing Greater Germany. His commanding officer in WWI against Austria was Jewish, so his Anti-Semitism is no greater than anyone else of the times, while his Slavophobia is just as pronounced with Russia building an advanced combined-arms force. Hitler and the leader of the Social Democrats help to thwart military takeover, for entirely different reasons (the Social Democrats like democracy, the Social Revolutionaries despise the Junkers because Hitler despises the Junkers).

Josef Stalin is Russia's Lucky Luciano in the Transcaucasus, Lenin a dry and dreary commenter on Great People's ruled Russia (a position taken over by Lev Bronstein later on), and Nationalist China under Ma Bufang is currently co-operating with Russia in an invasion of the Raj that sees the formation of the Free India fascist state under Subhas Chandra Bose, whose decision to work with Russia to establish a pro-Russian regime alienates Gandhi and Ali Jinnah. Of course such an invasion of the Raj pretty much has killed the British Empire dead, but still.
