"Enzo Boschi, the president of Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), will face trial on charges of manslaughter with six other scientists and technicians for failing to alert the residents of L'Aquila ahead of the devastating earthquake that struck the central Italian town on 6 April 2009, killing 308 people.

Ok now I know we do some wacky stuff with science here in the states (like the push to treat Intelligent Design as an actual scientific theory, and the general denial of AGW) but really? Even in the most whack job fundamentalist hick town no one here would be stupid enough to actually file charges for failing to predict something, hell we'd be more likely to burn them at the stake as witches if they had. I am however baffled how a modern industrialized nation could come up with something so far out in the fields of lunacy that the judge didn't treat the charges as an elaborate prank.
Is Italy really so backward of a country that they have any chance of being convicted?

Date: 27/5/11 19:41 (UTC)Also, there is the fact that smart Italians migrated to America where the grass is greener. One of the side effects of a brain drain is what is left behind un-drained.
Re: America is full of smart Italians

From:Not really a science problem
Date: 27/5/11 20:24 (UTC)Predicting earthquakes is impossible with our current technology. The so-called warning signs were things that happen frequently without incident (ie: not good predictors). This is the equivalent of prosecuting someone for doing a rain dance right before a heat wave.
That it's getting to court at all just shows the flaws in the justice system.
