http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2011/03/13/wi-repub-lives-outside-district-with-mistress-says-wife/

So, the political party that offers family values defines that as sitting Senators liking whores in diapers, sitting members of the Congress with 'wide stances', leaders of the xenophobic wing having sex with underage Mexican illegals, potential Presidential candidates that talk about defense of marriage even as they divorce cancer-stricken wives and are on their third marriage (Newt Gingrich) and three marriages in general, despite rhetoric from them about Christian values, when Jesus and Paul and Peter all condemned divorce more harshly than Moses did.......

And now there's this, one of them who lives outside his district with his mistress, who is 25 while he's 45. So I'm going to ask, does anyone besides these people take them seriously when they bemoan threats to family values and the sanctity of marriage? I mean it would seem to me that a political party dedicated explicitly to defending a Christian view of Marriage would have taboos on divorce in general, and particularly divorce and re-marriage.  On the other hand, there's a famous celebrity from Oop North who advocates abstinence even as her daughter parlays being a teenage mother into being a celebrity. Go figure.......

In a nutshell...

Even hypocrisy — professing one thing but doing another — is in the conservative view preferable to a denial of standards, which leads to moral chaos or nihilism.
- Dinesh D'Souza, in Letters to a Young Conservative

I think there just isn't any hay to be made by pointing out the moral failings of Christian/Family values politicians, except in a preaching-to-the-choir sense. Outside of the choir, they're largely OK with those failings, and will go far out of their way to rationalize them, so long as the forms are observed.

I take that completely differently. The point of that is not to rationalize the behavior, but to point out that striving to reach a goal and failing is preferable to not having a goal at all.

Or, to use a cartoon posted to the cartoon community a while back:

Frankly, I don't care what Republicans do in their marital/sex life provided it doesn't break the law and isn't wildly immoral.

I suppose the hypocritical example (which is hardly what the Bristol Palin example represents, sorry to say) speak to their moral credibility, but I didn't think they had much moral credibility beforehand anyway.

That's a charitable enough viewpoint... but maintaining a moral/legal divide gets complicated by just those politicians who want a certain sexual morality to be the law.

And this strikes to the heart of why many people are so riled up by the hypocrisy of family values politicians. It's resentment born of "One law for the powerful, another law for the common man."

Meh this sort of thing is getting old tbh. The GOP doesn't push the whole sexual morality thing as much largely because so many have been caught in scandal. It's mostly limited these days to gay marriage and even that will crumble for similar reasons.

I look forward to the day when we can actually focus on relevant issues.

Some of the other examples, the ones who talk the family values talk, make sense as examples of hypocrisy. This one does not.

Because there's a difference between advocating that the legal rules for everyone are family-friendly and personally following all of a moral code. It seems a pretty simple distinction, you should be able to grasp this.

Slightly off topic, but this is one of the things that REALLY pisses me off when it comes to political discussion and "debate" - bringing a politician's children into the situation. They're not the ones running for office. If Sarah Palin were your everyday, run-of-the-mill housewife and mother, would you do the same thing? Would you walk up to her if she were just some average citizen and tell her what a horrible mother you think she is because her teenager daughter had a child? She doesn't need to be there 24/7 to hold her child's hand. Those are the kinda kids who end up committing suicide before they hit 20.
If you wanna judge Sarah Palin, then judge her for the idiot she is but leave her kids out of it. That goes for any politician, really.

Sarah Palin brought her OWN children into the mix. She's NOT some "average citizen". If a politician says "leave my kids alone," -- like the Obamas have done, that's one thing, but Palin actively injected her children into the campaign.
