Sources close to the matter the resignation, first reported by CNN, came under pressure from the White House, where officials were furious about his suggestion that the Obama administration is mistreating Manning, the Army private who is being held in solitary confinement in Quantico, Virginia, under suspicion that he leaked highly classified State Department cables to the website Wikileaks.

Looks like Obama is now defending mistreating prisoners and even punishing those who speak out against it. An interesting turn. I guess that Guantanamo thing isn't going anywhere any more either. I think I agree with Andrew Sullivan's take on this.

Pretty disappointing indeed. Sullivan is spot on too.

I recommend Glenn Greenwald as he has covered this extensively:

He isn't "rotting" in his cell, and the death penalty is highly unlikely.

Well he has been charged under the UCMJ but the conditions of his holding are still a travesty.

Otherwise the Gov. needs to make up it's mind. If they're going to try him as a civie there needs to be a proper inditement.

Agreed. It's a black mark on Obama's presidency.

If I thought my vote mattered I would vote Kucinich in the next election, if he's still running.

It would be interesting to see the conservatives demanding to see his birth certificate to make sure he wasn't born in Oz.

I actually wanted to vote for him this last election, though I knew he didn't have a chance, unfortunately he was out long before I ever got a chance.

Yep, Mannings treatment, assuming what is being said about it is true, is disgraceful and I think Obama should issue an order instructing them to treat him humanely. Even though the right wing will no doubt castigate him for sticking up for the guy.

That said, I'm much more upset over the fact that Guantanamo still exist and the treatment of the hundreds there.

Why have they still not been tried for whatever crimes they are accused of?

They can't be tried because they're super-villains with magical powers that will enable them to escape unseen from SUPERMAX prisons.

And once they've escaped, they will gather their powers and resources and unleash nuclear holocaust upon America, killing hundreds of millions of people with secretly planted nuclear bombs.

You don't want to help unleash nuclear holocaust do you?

Once again he's pandering to the right. If he goes easy on this guy his detractors will yell that he's going soft on a traitor.

Is no one telling Obama it's useless to win them over or is he just not listening?
