http://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/swiss_news/New_legislation_creates_dilemma_for_Mormons.html?cid=29037044

New legislation in Switzerland is going to dramatically cut back the number of Mormon missionaries allowed into the country. The Mormons are crying foul and the Swiss government is claiming it's all part of new rules regarding limits on the number of foreigners it allows in and that Mormons aren't specifically being targeted.

Frankly, after reading this I'm of the mind that this is really poorly defined legislation more than discrimination. But with that said I can see how the Mormons would look at this and smell something fishy. Switzerland got some real flak over Islam there recently so I'd think they'd want to avoid a repeat of that.

Believe me, they don't give a cat's poop about the flak it would cause. ;(

Look at our guys - they just ban the mofos. No, actually the Mormons do enjoy some rights here. Mostly the right to be mocked for their ridiculous clothing when they're on their recruiting missions. (They always go in pairs, hair very short cut, old fashioned trousers with suspenders put on white or chequered shirts, holding a Book of Mormon, wearing backsacks, and talking strange things to people). Without much success.

"Oh look, it's those Americans again..."
"Yeah, ain't they funny?"
"Yeah. And they can't drink."
"Pfeh."

They're not wearing solid black ties? I'm guessing this picture is either fake or this is some radical splinter group of the LDS.

Haven't seen no Mormon in chequered shirt. Isn't that some kind of sacrilege or something?

You can't start a Christian congregation is Switzerland very easily, either. Or a business.

It's a different country.

True. I've been trying to start a bank for ages. I've got the money, but they just won't let me.

Bit off topic-- but when I worked at a data mining firm for the record industry, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir CDs and tracks outsell by far anything in pop. Just insanely massive sales. And a lot of it will not track on Billboard due to how they now sell directly versus using distributors and retail outlets.

Damn -- I'd love to see a VHS Behind the Music (do they still do those?) on the MTQ.

I'd agree, this looks like rules run amok, which is really par for the course for the Swiss dealing with foreign nationals.

Around here we refuse to talk about them or do anything about them even if they're right in front of us or we're one of them. Different strokes.

I'm sure this measure fits in well with their xenophobic snob elitist culture. It's all about votes, ya know.
