In what ways are poor people oppressed?

Fresh veggies may be inexpensive in some cases (and it really depends on what vegetables you're talking about, whether they're fresh, canned, or frozen, where you live, and what your grocery access is like), but in a lot of cases they're either not, or the added cost of convenience foods is more than made up by the fact that a lot of poor people work long hours and/or multiple jobs and don't have time to cook fresh vegetables, and the convenience foods will stretch a lot farther - they keep longer and make more meals, not to mention being a lot more filling than eating vegetables (and that vegetables alone do not make up a meal!). Add that to the fact that food education is, as you mentioned, poor in this country - I dunno, I'm a college-educated woman (from a poor family, though) and I don't know how to cook raw/fresh peas or asparagus, to say nothing of vitamin-rich veggies like kale and spinach - and those are just examples I remember clearly from my last trip to the grocery store; I'm very thankful to have access to a good one, with lots of good, fresh fruits and vegetables for offer, whereas those in my immediate area who can't afford to go a few neighborhoods and 30+ blocks away for their groceries are stuck with a choice of two grocery stores that are cramped and not terrifically clean, with rather dismal fruit and veggie selections.

Er... tl;dr: fresh veggies aren't always cheaper - or easier! - when you make other circumstantial considerations.

yes, you're right, I was just going from last shopping experience, supermarkets are the problem (IMHO) for prices and Wrapping on veg.. (Much of it comes from the ground for heavens sake!!!), what's 30 blocks in English? Miles will do, (Even if you sell em short like your Gallons :) )

It's about two and a half miles, according to Google Maps. :) It doesn't seem that far, but given that not many people here (New York City) drive, you either have to shell out for a cab or a car to take you (which is expensive, $10+ each way), or take the bus or subway, both of which take longer, so what in a more rural area would be a half hour's excursion becomes a two hour long trip, at the least. If I had a job (I'm a student), I probably wouldn't have the time to go there as much as I do, which would mean a lot less fresh veggies and fruits, cos they'd go bad. As it is, it's a pity I can only make it once a week normally... twice if I forget something I can't get in the smaller, more local places.

...and this post just totally reminded me that I clean forgot to get the potatoes when I went grocery shopping the other day! Augh. I'd better get those before Thanksgiving, or my best friend is going to hurt me. XD

(Amusing: the song "The Economy of Mercy" by Switchfoot came on my iPod's shuffle as I typed this. :P)

damn two and a half miles, is hell with a days shopping, let alone a weeks, I guess we in the west should be thankful though, we do (For the most part) always have water nearby, albeit with added poison.

LMAO How things change.....

I'm not impoverished, I'm poor, there's a difference - my basic needs are met, with some luxuries. This was significantly less the case when I was a kid, but I've (thankfully) found myself in better circumstances now. I have a three or four year old iPod Classic 80GB MP3 player that I bought with the money I earned at a job I had during the summer break from college a few years back. :3

I had a walkman, too, seriously. And the old, clunky CD players. ..okay, more than one of the old, clunky CD players, because other kids in high school kept stealing mine. xD bastards!
