Or maybe it is just the teabagging South Africans?
"Well, people have said that South Africans have told them they must go back to where they come from, they don't belong here," Verryn says. "Some have been threatened, some assaulted. But the general feeling is they must get out of here."

Clearly, Obama as some more non-enforcement to do overseas as well as at home.

There were the usual denials of racism from the usual suspects:
The South African government's response has been ambiguous. It recently re-established the interministerial committee on xenophobia. But its head, and minister of police, Nathi Mthethwa, describes the latest violence as criminal, and not based on race or ethnicity.

They can't fool us; it's not a coincidence that everyone involved is an African American South African.

There are, of course, the usual complaints from residents:
"The people from the outside of this country, we don't need them because they're taking our jobs," says Victor Mbatha, who, like everyone else around the table, is unemployed.

The others nod in agreement.

"We want them to go back to their countries ... because this is our country," Mbatha says.

So...more evidence of racist teabagging or should be believe the transparent claims of the apologists?

Ah.....the blacks in Africa really don't consider the ones in America black.

Correction: They don't think of them as African by and large. Black is just a descriptor white people came up with to denote race via skin color.

Bit of a sloppy attempt at humour. Xenophobia is as much a race-specific manifestation of bigotry as ageism is (that is to say, not at all), so a presumably literate person wouldnt find irony in the presence of xenophobia in any racially-monolithic region (black, white, or any other possible ethnic make up).

Not to mention that the US narrative of anti-immigration entails far more nuance than racism to include xenophobia, nativism, and classism -- terms that are not synonyms for each other.

The proper analogy would be the Native Americans trying to kick white people AND black people and KorenGuy01 out of the US.

I see what you did there. ;-)

Well they're just called blacks here. See how easy it is?

And who would've thunk that xenophobia exists outside of the US too.

Impossible, only racist white Americans are xenophobic.

What's funny is I have heard liberals make the same remark with the same sarcastic tone to make fun of people from countries other than the US who think there is only racism in the US. It come up a lot in anti-racist forums. "Well, in my country ___ there is no racism unlike in the US." Then 3 or 4 people are like "No No No! Racism is NOT just in the USA"

I don't know of any liberal who thinks racism is only found in the USA.

It can be pretty dodgy outside of the city-state of London and it's immediate dormitory hinterland. (And parts of that are pretty suspect too.)

Despite their tremendous efforts to heal their wounds, South Africa are still a traumatized society. And that's normal - the scars from apartheid are still too fresh (20 years, hardly a generation).

Ironically, by trying to make a parallel to America, you're indirectly acknowledging that America has a problem too. Only, slavery ended, what, like a century and a half ago?

Jim Crowe is a symptom of a problem, not the cause for that problem. When you think about it. The question is, are you honest enough with yourselves to look into that problem real deep, and start asking the question what could be done to solve it. Everything else is just scratching the surface or being in denial.

Jim Crow was equally totalitarian and ended about 30 years ago. But since everyone expects the USA to perform social miracles with the ex-dictatorship portions of it, when the shoe's on the other foot......

You know what you're doing all the time? When someone non-American criticizes the US, you instantly jump with the silly argument "But you did that too in the past!" And that is somehow supposed to put an end to the story, but it doesn't. Because this way you're just diverting the attention from the initial problem being discussed, namely: why is the US doing the same shit all those others did in the past? Instead of trying to answer that, you're essentially telling everyone else to STFU with the argument that they don't have the right to talk about it, since their ancestors once did the same shit.

That's stupid.
