In my utopia breast augmentation surgery will be outlawed (save for procedures done for illness reasons) on two grounds:

1) It's a waste of valuable resources*
2) They look bad

*In my dream utopia, healthcare is not only "free" (well, Universal) it's also mandatory

Just for a checkup to make sure you don't got some transmittable infectious disease. It's not like we'll be running experiments on ya or anything.

Why wouldn't they, anyway? It's free of charge--in the sense that Universal healthcare is. You don't pay when you go. So why wouldn't poor people (or rich people, for that matter) go to the doctor?

Body autonomy is a pretty big price to pay for the economic and lifestyle benefits. I'm not rejecting it out of hand, but are you prepared to forcibly treat people who don't want to be treated? What of the "edge cases" where there's some controversy over what does or does not constitute an illness? It wasn't so long ago that homosexuality was in the DSM, after all.

Clearly, in my dream utopia, homosexuality is *not* considered anything other than what it is: a persons personal choice WRT their sexual partners.

Forcibly treat those who pose a health risk. Or exile them. If your illness only affects you and is not going to spread, OK.
But if you're gonna bring down the rest of my society, no way bub.

It'll be like pre-Roe-v.-Wade days or prohibition of alcohol/drugs. Making stuff people want illegal has significant unintended consequences.

There was a Gray's Anatomy episode about a guy who got a chest implants (he wanted a manly chest with big muscular breasteseses). He was the joke of the hospital. Was that sexist though? I've heard of some bodybuilders having calf implants (due to poor genetics, they get them BIG MOOERS), BUT I think that disqualifies them from winning a contest.

My right to patient autonomy should be stronger than your sense of aesthetics. Also, what about implants for women who've had mastectomies? Do they have to live with a body they dislike due to the surgery, or can they get implants and live as recipients of your scorn for not "looking right"?

Which would seem to be covering that case.

However there is absolutely no logical basis to allow that and not allow women with an A cup or less to get augmentation to a B or C cup for psychological reasons.

In fact there is no logically consistent reason to allow for them to correct for mastectomy and not allow them for anyone else save for "I find them icky" and that is hardly a sound basis for designing a society.

I feel sorry for people who have such an attachment to changing their physical appearance that they would go so far as to have a breast enhancement operation. Is there any health care provision in your youtopia for treating a mental disorder such as vanity?

In the case of Menachem Begin, the "plastic operation" was necessary to fool people into thinking that he had changed his appearance and to give the British a rationale for not finding him.

I really do applaud you.....It is really frustrating sometimes for guys. When I am dealing with people, trying to sell a job, I prefer looking woman in the eye, but sometimes what women wear make it difficult not to let the eyes stray. (altho I could tell some very strange stories after 40 years of going out on emergency roof leaks)
