Huntington's Clash of Civilizations deals with an aspect of the global scene that one of our students likened to an algae raft. Imagine a lake completely covered with algae. Minor differences in the genetic composition of algae leads to a competition between the distinct varieties. A zone of conflict appears where each variety attacks the other with hostile toxins.
The planet is like the lake in the sense that it is covered with power cults of minor differences. The God of Redneckistan differs slightly from the Allah of Wahhibistan which differs slightly from the Allah of Khomeinistan. All of these material Creator gods differ slightly from that of Mosistan and that of Maoistan. Each of these power cults secrete toxins in a struggle to dominate the globe.
What Huntington failed to consider is not the conflict, but the name "civilization." Stone Age power structures do not a civilization make. The problem is a lack of civility and civilization.
What do you see as your role in your local power cult? Do you see yourself as its proponent or as an element of resistance?
