Sometimes there comes a painful day when you have to take the car keys away from grandpa even though he doesn't want to give them up. But how do you take away the keys to the country away in this situation? -

Biden has doubled-down on officially stating he will NOT be exiting the race. He is also bucking "the elites," which I find interesting. This contradicts rumors that he will be out this week. What does everyone think his chances are?

Biden firmly denounces calls to step aside from fellow Democrats: 'The voters have spoken'
The president said the voters have chosen him and dared Democratic “elites” who want him out to challenge him at the party’s convention next month.

Except that the voters really didn't speak. They weren't given an option. The idea that the Democrats held a primary is laughable, despite how many delegates Joe Biden received.

But fine, shrug... The Dem big money donors are the ones who call the shots. Not Biden or "the voters". We'll have to wait and see what they do. That said, the big money grifters are between a rock and a hard place. Him or her. Not much of a choice, really. They done shot themselves in the foot.

Biden’s Physician Met with Parkinson’s Disease Expert at White House, Visitor Logs Show

I don't think it matters at this point what Biden does, or what his medical records show, or what cognitive test he undergoes. I think most people have seen an elderly parent or grandparent decline as they age. Trying to fight against the idea that Biden is too old is like trying to stop a tidal wave or an earthquake. The instinct people have not to select a frail and infirm leader is too great an obstacle for Biden to overcome. Biden's campaign was over the moment his eyes glazed over at the debate.

Biden's departure seems inevitable.

From this earth, you mean? Certainly.

I think two things about it: 1. There’s still plenty of time before the election for fortunes to change again, and 2. The party has still not been able to produce even a potential candidate who has a better chance against Trump in a general election. It’s all about the battleground states.

So it's about winning the election, with little to no thought of what comes next?

Winning does rather matter a lot, wouldn't you say?

No one should feel misled or surprised by Bidens condition, it's been noticeable for years. Democrats and the media are just pretending to care now because his poll numbers are bad and getting worse.

Late isn't always better than never though - Biden probably still is their best option.

Michelle doesn't want it, Kamala is mentally miles behind Biden even at his worst, Newsom has rumors of an affair coming out (which usually isn't a big deal unless your opponents biggest weakness is women voters...).

There's also the economy and wars and the border and all those other evil right wing talking points.

His mind being gone seems like it matters but if he was ahead in the polls and everything was running smoothly it wouldn't be a story at all.

> Biden probably still is their best option

Still refuse to believe this. Out of millions of party members, Biden is their best option? Seriously?

Best likely option may be a better way of putting it. Sure they have smarter more alert more competent people but there's also the questions of who are you passing over and who are you pissing off with each other option? If there were a great choice, everyone would be saying it.

Unfortunately, it takes a lot of time and energy to get any particular person embedded in the national psyche. At this point the party would need to choose from a short list of people who already have that kind of presence. Cross that list with people who would actually want the job, and you end up with a set of people who just don't have enough broad appeal.

The Dems had plenty of time to field people properly ... almost four years of time, at this point. They could have declared from the beginning that Biden was a one term president. That time is gone.
