Someone recently expressed hope that now that Iran has openly admitted the true reason for that disaster with the passenger airplane, this might be a sign that the end of the dominance of post-truth is nigh.
Not so fast, I say. Now, turns out both Iran and the US shared something in common in these dramatic times: their love for lies, and truth-twisting.
In Tehran, thousands of protesters are putting their lives on the line, once it transpired that the revolutionary guard had incidentally downed a Ukrainian plane, killing 176 people. Nice that they admitted it, right? Except, for days, they used to claim it was a technical error.
The same way Trump claimed Soleimani's murder was a preemptive act of self-defense, as the bad general was preparing some attacks on US troops across the region. Except, now we're learning that another major Quds operative, and Soleimani's aide, was also being targeted at the exact same time somewhere in Yemen (but that attempt failed) - which means these assassination attempts were part of a larger, orchestrated campaign to behead Iran's proxy-building capabilities. So, a dangerous geopolitical game rather than self-defense. But we're used to seeing those lies from Trump, right? Nothing special to see here, move along folks...
As for Iran, the situation in that country has become so unbearable that even folks like taekwon-do champ Kimia Alisade are fleeing the country. The only Iranian woman to ever win an Olympic medal was called "one of millions of oppressed women".
In the meantime, US defense secretary Mark Esper has contradicted Trump's statements that Soleimani had to be killed as he was planning attacks on a few US embassies. Even Esper is saying there was no direct proof of that.
Trump has told Fox that the US embassy in Baghdad was a probable target, and three other embassies were also "probably" potential targets.
Trump explained Soleimani's purposeful murder with an imminent threat on America, which of course makes that operation a justified anti-terror defense action from a US standpoint. The Dems have questioned the rationale behind these actions, and they're especially irrirated that Congress was never briefed in advance. Some Reps are also pissed with this, by the way.
Esper is now flip-flopping, saying Trump may've just spoken of probabilities, and he shares his boss' opinion, and "expectation" that US embassies were being targeted.
So folks, meet Iran and America, two countries that don't give a fuck about truth and facts. They'd say whatever suits them at the moment, and do whatever they want without consulting with anybody. I'm sure deep on some level, their leaders would get along quite nicely, just as America's leader enjoys and admires the company of nice folk like Putin and Kim.
