McConnell ad telegraphs plan to protect Trump against Pelosi in impeachment fight

We have always known, of course, that Republicans in the Senate would place their partisan loyalty before loyalty to the Constitution. But now we have McConnell confessing it on tape.

McConnell: "The way that impeachment stops is with a Senate majority with me as Majority Leader”.

So when the Senate ignores all the evidence and eventually votes to acquit Trump, Republicans will say "See? His acquittal in the Senate proves that he was innocent!" That's going to be the talking point. And we will say "No. This was pre-cooked an pre-arranged months ago, before any evidence was even presented".

You've seen my prediction now. So pay attention if you are planning on using the above talking point.

I believe your prediction. I read about the McConnell Declaration of Trial-Rigging.

It is something that certainly won't be determined on the Senate floor, but then impeachment is a political process by design. What constitutes an impeachable offense is whatever the majority of the members of the house consider to be an impeachable offense at that moment in time. What constitutes the burden of proof is whatever will convince 2/3rds of the senators present at that time that the person in question should be removed from office.

Reality does intrude in politics, so the more evidence that comes out that the president used his office to try to bully the Ukraine government to interfere in a US election, the more likely we will see the end of President Trump. It really depends on if GOP senators perceive a bigger risk from democrats during the general election than from Trump supporters during the primaries. If this is the case, it doesn't really matter what deals Mr. McConnell tries to make. The constitution itself just provides.

His acquittal in the Senate will just prove it is a partisan issue - I don't think anyone's walking away from this with the 'gotcha!'s they think they are.

I think it may be a bit more complicated than that. There is a feedback mechanism in the body-politic which is dependent upon gross public opinion; and some of Trump’s actions may trigger a response from that feedback.

A lot of it will be how much folk believe the spin, or the testimony. I’d tend to opt for the testimony in that particular case. But each to their own.

Spin and testimony shouldn't matter as much considering a transcript of the call has been released.

That's assuming this is about the Ukraine call - which I think everyone knows it isn't, but everyone still has to pretend that it is.

Well it could be a combination of that and the White House press conference where he asked China to intervene...

It’s difficult to say.
