It all started with a short message from the anti-Daesh coalition: Syrian pro-government units have started an unprovoked attack against the Syrian Democratic Forces HQ on February 7. During the attack, members of the anti-terrorist coalition and their Syrian allies were located 8 km east of the ceasefire line along the Euphrates. In their defense effort, the coalition forces hit on the assaulting units, repelling the attack.

The description would hardly suggest that this was the biggest clash between the US and Russian military since the end of the Cold War. Because in the next few days it transpired that the so called "Syrian pro-government forces" that attacked the Kurdish positions at Deir ez-Zor included a number of members of the infamous Russian mercenary company Wagner. Although the casualties are oficially not soldiers from the Russian military, the bloodbath does create conditions for escalation of the conflict.

It also transpired that the coalition forces had hit the attacking battalion with all everything it had at its disposal: high-precision artillery, drones, fighter jets and helicopters, stealth fighters F22 Raptor. The result was that the attacking side was almost completely destroyed. Reports about the number of casualties vary between a few dozen and at least 600. The pro-Assad media condemned the clash as "a new aggression in defense of terrorism", but still they confirmed that "a few dozen fighters had been killed", and called the incident "a brutal slaughter".
