While the Balkans are seeing a lack of summer this year, one cyclon following the other and bringing rain and floods, Northern Europe is swept by record heat (Sweden has had its first wildfires in many decades). Japan has reported the highest temperature ever, 41.1'C. More than 100 people have died for the last couple of weeks there. Tens of thousands have been hospitalised.

The new rains have been welcomed with relief in Greece, though. Now that the ashes have settled, they have revealed an apocalyptic picture. Wildfires had engulfed large parts of the capital district, killing over 70 people. The heat wave and the strong winds contributed to the inferno.

What is likely the hottest summer in 4 centuries has been torturing Britain as well. Some regions haven't seen rain in 2 months. The rainfall in the UK has generally been just 20% of the usual amount thus far this season.

Dozens of forest fires have engulfed Sweden and Norway. The temperature in Uppsala, just north of Stockholm, has reached a record 33'C. There are parts of Sweden that haven't seen rain since May. This has been the worst drought in 74 years.

In Canada, the heat waves started at the beginning of July, killing at least 70 people. Last week the temperature in Montreal was over 38'C. The authorities warned young children, pregnant women, elderly people and those with chronic illnesses to stay indoors through the day.

Some respite is expected in the Northern hemisphere in the following days, cooler temperatures and some rainfall being forecast. But the problem is not just the heat waves. Earlier in July, Japan and Greece were hit by catastrophic floods. You see, the weather patterns are swinging from one extreme to another.

Despite the stubborn insistence of guys like Trump and their supporters, there is no doubt left that human activity has affected the global climate to bring his ever intensifying series of extremities. Of course such phenomena were observed in the past as well, but never in this sequence and frequences. And neither did they ever have such a global scope. This is the first time that a single heat wave has engulfed 4 continents.

NOAA reports (see link at the bottom) that there is a 65% chance of El Nino forming in the Pacific this autumn, that probability increasing to 70% this coming winter. And this means that 2019 will likely be even more extreme than 2018.

What we call an "extreme heat wave" today we will simply call "summer" in a matter of decades if we don't sharply reduce carbon emissions. The choice is up to us...

Indeed.

But by the time it gets really bad, the Denialists will all be dead. And I guess they think they will be in heaven, or something.

Oh, I don't know. Maybe a nuclear winter might slow things down.

Or a Venus scenario could settle it once and for all.

Fascism was revived to ensure that we won't do enough fast enough. To make sure that things get worse still. Damn it.
