Just imagine...
29/8/16 23:10...The biggest stunt in the history of US presidential elections. I mean, Trump pulling a major "I was just pulling your leg, folks" trick at the very last minute, and abruptly ending his run to the White House. Claiming to have only aimed to teach America a lesson. John Oliver actually did a piece much to this effect the other day:
John Oliver Compares Donald Trump To 'The Kid Who Ran For President' & There Are Some Haunting Similarities
The awkward and lovable British comedian basically appealed to Trump (albeit seemingly jokingly) to choose the third from among the two terrible options that he currently stands before (losing the election and proving himself to be a failure, or, even worse, actually winning it and having to run the country). The third option is to do what this fictional kid did in the story that he cited. A kids book really, but very thought-provoking.
The important part of the story is the kid's winning speech, after he has been elected president, despite having run a mock campaign aimed to expose the perverse way the public can be swayed by populism and sweet promises - any promises, really. Realising that the joke has gone out of control and he is about to be elected president for real, the kid calls it quits and pronounces the following words:
"I have a question for the grown-ups of America ... Are you out of your minds? You want me as Commander In Chief of the Armed Forces? What if somebody attacked the United States? Would you really want me in charge? America must be in really bad shape if you elected me president. You better get it together and find some qualified people to run this country, or we'll all be in big trouble."
Trump could actually write some history that hasn't been invented yet. I am not sure if anyone has ever done such a thing - anywhere. And if he does, he could become a legend. Is basically what Oliver argues. And I find a lot of reason in his argument.
Of course, this isn't going to happen. But the very thought of it is quite enticing, wouldn't you agree?
