Seriously, is this what the GOP has come to? I'm sure the regular chorus of GOP defenders will appear and say there's really nothing wrong with what they are doing. But for those of us who are willing to indict both sides when they are guilty--what the bloody flipping fuck?

If this was done deliberately (and I believe it was) then fuck the GOP for deliberately trying to dupe people.
If this was done accidentally (and I do not believe that) then whoever made these websites should be fired and publicly denounced for doing a very shitty job.

But hey, when people don't like your ideas, why not just lie to them about em?

Don't judge it by what *you* think is misleading, think of whether or not it would mislead the dimmest person in your family.

Definitely illegal here. We had some volunteers get in trouble for handing out how-to-vote cards whilst wearing t-shirts the same colour as the opposition. As long as a reasonable person may think you're representing one party, when you're actually representing another, it's illegal. This is how it should be. Democracy requires transparency, and any attempt to confuse the voters should be stepped on immediately. Unfortunately, I imagine that the stupid first amendment will mean US citizens can continue to fall prey to tricksters.

Who could possibly be duped by the ad in question? Seriously. Who would have the guts to admit such a depth of idiocy. Did you/they look at anything other than the relatively flattering picture? The content of the ad is crystal clear and directly above the place to donate is the coda: HELP US STOP JOHN LEWIS IN HIS TRACKS. Come on. If anyone actually donated in error to a group who was calling on fellow Montanans to learn why Congressman Lewis needs to be retired from Congress, due to this ad, then I have zero sympathy.

In the old days the oppo team would look for the least flattering picture and then photoshop it to make a candidate look like a cross between Nosferatu and Bozo the Clown. That was often decried, not without merit, as "deceptive." Assuming the content of the ad, the claims made, are within the normal range of hyperbole associated with politics, then this seems to me to be something of a rhetorical step up, actually.

Oh, and for the record, this is exactly the sort of thing that in 2 or 4 or N years you'll think back on and *not remember* that it was both sides. You'll only remember that it was the GOP. I predict this because you didn't do the 1 minute of "huh, is this new? has this happened before? Is anyone else doing it?" checking that would have turned up sites like walker2014 and reminded you of all the parody sites (that were oh-so-funny, even if not always easily identifiable as parody by everyone) for the guys you didn't like. You read an article and didn't even twig on the fact that it was biased to prompt you to look around for more facts.

This is why we end up in echo chambers where My Guys are Good! Your Guys are Bad! Because we _don't look_ for cases where our guys are doing what your guys are doing, and we _don't remember_ when people point it out to us (science says, and so does my experience). Besides, if my guys are doing it it must be good. And if your guys are doing something mean to my guys, well of course they are because your guys are evil!

You want politics to improve? You want discourse to improve? You have to do the work. That's general you.
