In the beginning, there was Peach
(ok so that might not be the beginning but we have to start somewhere right)

Later, Peach begat with themselves and eventually became Suns of the Tundra
Because Tool popularized that sort of music, their former music now had an audience. Besides releasing their own early stuff, they also took a few different forms. Since it was only half the original lineup they renamed the band Suns of the Tundra much later.

Peach begat Tool
Ok not really. Tool existed before Peach. Peach toured with Tool who had a bit of a different sound at the start. Tool took Justin Chancellor as their bassist after the original bassist quit, and Tool, being a collaborative effort had their sound changed forever to the more recognizable tool sound with heavy reliance on Chancellor's bass.

Tool begat with pretty much everybody with two notable offspring. One was Maynard's side project that let him be his wacky self, Puscifer.

The second offspring also involved Maynard, but just as vocals, not as the primary creative influence. A Perfect Circle was a project by one Billy Howedel. While working as a guitar tech, he let Maynard Keenan listen to some of his work and Keenan offered to lend his vocal talents. A perfect circle had a fairly wide cast, at different times having members everywhere from Geordie White from Marilyn Manson, both James Iha and Paz Lenchantin from The Smashing Pumpkins, and Danny Lohner who has been in every band under the sun, starting with Nine Inch Nails (you will never find a modern rock history that doesn't involve Nine Inch Nails at some point) but also producing for Marilyn Manson and now being a studio member of Puscifer. A Perfect Circle is in some sort of limbo currently, they plan on releasing some new songs at some point but have said maybe not an entire album, as all members are involved in many other projects.

Mr. Howerdel also has moved on and started his own new project- ASHES dIVIDE. Billy Howerdel is actually singing this time. Billy Howerdel is to ASHES dIVIDE as Trent Reznor is to Nine Inch Nails. Maynard isn't entirely forgotten though. His son, Devo Keenan plays Cello on some tracks.

This is obviously not a complete geneology, there are plenty of stillbirths, redheaded stepchilds and bastard children down the line.

I love that old Tool from their Opiate epoch. It's pure, aggressive and simple. And still has those complex, odd rhythms that have always distinguished them.

Man, I forgot how much I enjoyed that Perfect Circle album back in college. Kinda digging Ashes Divide, too. Thanks for the recommendation.

I'll always associate Tool with my rather short sojourn in the military. There was still a universal conscription back then, and we university graduates had to serve for 6 months rather than 9. But still, our military isn't like yours. It's a parody. Those were the longest and most boring 6 months of my life. And yet, I had this small cassette player with me, and I kept it with me while spending those long useless hours at the guard. And listened to Tool.

Memories...

You were allowed to listen to music while on duty?

Like I said, it was a complete parody.
