One of the things I've always enjoyed about this community are all the literary references. Pratchett, Tolkien, and so many more it's impossible to list. Now there is is whole "Thrones" thing that I suppose I'll have to read so I can be part of the "in" group. I mean people frequently reference characters, and sometimes I haven't a clue.
At any rate I have been reading the "Thursday Next" books by Jasper Fforde and it got me to thinking: Just how many people on this forum really know Jack Schitt?

This is so funny. A member of my SF club left one of those books at my house a few months ago and just today I picked it up and started reading it.

Sadly I barely take time to read fiction anymore. That said, I've been very slowly working my way through the Steven Erikson 'Malazan' series.

Game of Thrones on dvd might be the way to go - the series is so well produced and very enjoyable. I never read the novels which in this case, makes viewing all the more enjoyable.

Just be warned: you'll get the "boiled leather" earworm stuck in your head as soon as chapter 3 ;)

I pirate-downloaded the audiobooks, unabridged version, and have been trying to keep up with my lady's parallel reading, but it's way slower (and funnier).

Oooh your date says Thursday lulz!

Dude, I totally know Jack Schitt. And I have to say that if I had the potential to given birth to a kid who could only speak Lorem Ipsum, I would have rethought this whole fertility thing. I also have nightmares about a Mrs. Danvers army coming to get me. That image is more evocative of terror than anything Stephen King can throw at me.

That being said, Shades of Gray stank. As did the last Thursday Next novel. Which was shocking, really. Still, I have high hopes for the upcoming book.

I tried the Thursday Next but they weren't sufficiently internally consistent and the Game of Thrones is just soap opera in historic dress. Tolkein and Pratchett, now...

I have, however, primarily been reading school-related material this summer. I figure anything that can give me a leg up on graduate school is by definition good as it's one less second spent having to do that actually in said school.

Read the Thrones books and tell me which character you associate yourself with.

Hint: watch out for Pycelle. ;)

Read the books and/or watch the series. They are both top shelf. There is excessive gore and nudity in the show, however, if that offends your sensibilities.
