Santorum officially dropped out this afternoon:

“We made a decision over the weekend, that while this presidential race for us is over, for me, and we will suspend our campaign today, we are not done fighting,” Mr. Santorum said.

...

Mr. Santorum called Mr. Romney earlier in the day to tell him of his plans to suspend his campaign. Mr. Santorum told Mr. Romney that he is committed to defeating President Obama, but that he is not going to endorse immediately, said a source familiar with the call.

Given that 10 hours ago, reports were that he was heading back on the trail, one has to assume there may be an issue with his daughter we're not aware of, or perhaps his inner circle finally got through to him that he didn't have a path to victory.

EDIT: An email he sent to supporters says that Bella, the daughter who's been sick, is at home, but with pneumonia. The tone of the email definitely implies that this is the reason for the suspension.

Regardless, if someone told me a year ago that Rick Santorum would only be dropping out in the middle of April, I would have laughed. I'm pretty impressed that someone who, for all intents and purposes, was a running joke, was able to rehabilitate his image and become, for a time, a credible contender for President.

Damn, that would've been a hilariously easy win for Obama if he made the nomination.

That's what they said about Reagan and Carter back in 1980.

“Impressed” isn't exactly the word I would choose, but the point is well taken.

with the restrictions removed on campaign spending since the last election (Americans United), get used to it. In the future any monkey with a billionaire's backing can become 'credible'

I hope his daughter recovers soon.

And I hope all the uninsured people with illnesses have a better chance to recover now that he's not going to be president.

I think the real reason he dropped out was because he knew he was going to lose his home state of Pennsylvania.

Me too, but only if someone didn't tell me who his remaining competition would be. Newt could be the most unlikable politician on either side. Romney seems extremely smart, but can't connect with people. Did Santorum do well? Sure. Should he have been able to do better, given the circumstances? Double sure.

I never cared for his politics, he's far too extreme a conservative to be President, but I'm saddened by what he's been through and wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. I hope his daughter will be okay, and I wish nothing but the best for him and his family.

Hey and look at all he accomplished.

He singlehandedly showes the Tea Party to be a worthless bunch of liars by somehow winning their support even though he was the poster child for all they claimed to oppose. Further he showed Gingrich just how little political influence he has retained because without Santorum Gingrich would likely have been the "Not Romney" candidate leading him to believe that the support he was getting was actually because large numbers of people believed in him and not just a bunch of protest votes against the establishment candidate.

He may also have done a fair amount to allow Ron Paul's attempted coup of the Republican establishment to succeed because without a serious candidate to focus their attention on the Romney camp would have been allowed to focus their attention on Paul's activities, but now it is late enough in the election cycle that Romney will have to go straight from focusing on Santorum to focusing on Obama while Paul goes along loosing every primary and Caucus but getting his people elected to positions of power within the state and local Republican party offices.

DAILY QUOTE:
"The NATO charter clearly says that any attack on a NATO member shall be treated, by all members, as an attack against all. So that means that, if we attack Greenland, we'll be obligated to go to war against ... ourselves! Gee, that's scary. You really don't want to go to war with the United States. They're insane!"
