Poor Mitt Romney. He has Presidential hair. He has gravitas. He has an executive record. He currently bests President Obama in face to face polling of a hypothetical match up next year. But he cannot budge himself out of the position of "sloppy seconds" for a conservative base of voters who are desperately holding out for someone they can truly put a ring on and follow to the voting booth in 2012.

Romney, despite this, keeps standing as the establishment choice and as a solid but not moving 20-25% vote getter. So far, he has seen the rise of Rep. Michele Bachmann who shot to the top of the Republican field last summer only to fall below double digits by now. Texas Governor Rick Perry rose instantly to a commanding lead among Republican voters....and then he opened his mouth. Most recently, businessman Herman Cain's inability to get a clear message out about allegations of improper sexual conduct sank his stint at the top of the heap.

And now former Speaker of the House of Representatives Newt Gingrich is leading the Republican field. One can only assume this means that some time in the next month, his candidacy will be sitting in a heap of stinking ruins either by mistakes of his own or by something orchestrated by his rivals.

So -- how do you think Mr. Gingrich will fall before he can secure the nomination?

I think with about the sixth random-ass weird fight he picks with some random-ass federal agency (like he did with the CBO), people will just get put off by his arcane and inscrutable strategies. You know what needs to go? You know what is the problem with this country? The Department of Cave Research, that's what. They're all a bunch of fucking commies in the Dept. of Cave Research!

You need a "none of the above" option, because I think we're looking at our Republican nominee.

Honestly, I think if there were a bit more time in the calendar, Huntsman would have a good shot at the nomination. I doubt that Newt will hold through New Hampshire, even if he does win in Iowa, which will be difficult without the evangelical vote and with so little organization in the state. Gingrich has surged in NH, but it's almost entirely at the expense of other non-Romneys, and that suggests that Romney's voting bloc is consistent enough that he will pull it out here.

I'll admit I have no idea about South Carolina or the like, though.

Then it'll be the thing that sinks the Newt Presidential bid instead of the nomination bid. The man is a moral minefield. He's a philanderer, his years post Congress would make a Nigerian Prince blush and he was run out of Congress on a rail. The Obama commercials practically write themselves.

At this point 4 years ago, it was Clinton vs. Giuliani and anyone who thought anyone else had a chance was borderline delusional.

Maybe his downfall will be something extreme, like he paid for a mistress's abortion - or worse - maybe in a few weeks he'll close a speech with Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas.

Okay, "How to Catch the Eye of Newt" is a very funny line. Congratulations. Your poll left out at least one interesting and likely possibility: the economy takes a turn for the worse forcing people to consider how recklessly crazy many of Gingrich's ideas are.

Frankly, I suspect that it's going to be that first item that torpedo's Gingrich's fantasies.

Gingrich is a ridiculous candidate. (http://www.forbes.com/sites/erikkain/2011/12/02/new-ron-paul-ad-blasts-newt-gingrich-for-serial-hypocrisy/)

Gingrich's status as an influential, successful, relatively flexible politician will do him in. The Tea Party won't accept anyone to the left of Pavelic as a leader of the Republican Party, and to them Gingrich is Tito.

Oh, and before anyone starts on with the "but teh kittehs!" God can start with the feral cats in the Northern Territory, that kill about 15 million mammals a day and are wiping out entire species. Hopefully, god does it in a way that wipes out irresponsible pet owners as well.

No, seriously, I think that's a brilliant plan. Pick a state, go door to door & tell everyone in the state they're louts. People in other parts of the country will line up to vote for you because you finally told the losers in THAT STATE the "truth."

I feel disenfranchised by your poll. This makes me sad. :(

DAILY QUOTE:
"The NATO charter clearly says that any attack on a NATO member shall be treated, by all members, as an attack against all. So that means that, if we attack Greenland, we'll be obligated to go to war against ... ourselves! Gee, that's scary. You really don't want to go to war with the United States. They're insane!"
