OK, so the Israeli government has basically been releasing adds from the Department of Immigrant Absorption (how precisely does one absorb immigrants? Borg? Blob? Bodysnatchers?) that indicate that American Jews aren't real Jews, and that Israelis should marry only Israeli Jews. My verbal reaction to this can be summarized thus "What the Hell is wrong with Benjamin Netanyahu and why the Hell does he possibly think this is a good idea?". My reaction with-gif can be summarized thus:



As I really don't think there's much more to say about this kind of cheap racist populist stunt-politics than that.

Like they could ever push us away. They really only come to us when they need us, and spend the rest of their time basically showing us they don't care about us at all and generally disagree with us on everything, and yet we keep running to their defense and fighting their battles for them.

In fact, I'm fairly certain that if Israel and the US were people, Israel would have a restraining order against its creepy, stalker-ish fuckbuddy.

Funny, I watched the comedy The Infidel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BMudF0MQgC0) and there a British Jew told the protagonist that the Jews who live in Israel are not real Jews. =)

The film is really interesting by the way... Imagine yourself believing you've been a devoted Jew all your life... until one day you find out you had been born Muslim and adopted by Jews. The horrors!!! Now this story is the reversed.

The similarity of mythic nationalist narratives is interesting. The nation of Israel was founded by non-believing Trotskyites -- but it has become politically useful to offer a narrative of free markets and religious faith. Likewise, the United States was founded by non-believing gentry -- but it has become politically useful to offer a narrative of egalitarianism and religious faith.

I think Israel's founders were always a bit of a mixed bag. But Zionists had political power from as early as 1919, sitting at the Paris Peace Talks, demanding a Jewish home in then British Palestine.

Netanyahu is a jackass politician sitting on top of a collectivist political system. He says the things he says to curry favor with whatever groups he believes can support his political ambitions.

In actual fact, he has very little in the way of legs to stand upon. The idea that Jews who are Americans are somehow less friends of Israel is ridiculous on its face. A quick read of Haaretz online (http://www.haaretz.com/print-edition/opinion/israel-is-a-third-world-country-in-denial-1.398849) will clue one in to the fact that there is much greater diversity of opinion on the subject of Israel in Israel itself than there is in U.S. mainstream media.
