A chap can dream….
25/11/11 12:24Okay Friday people….
If you could own one car for pleasure (not daily transport, if you see what I mean) what would be your choice.
I used to think that, for me, it would be an Aston-Martin DB4 Zagato. But nowadays I think it would be one of these:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iso_Grifo
or maybe this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Bizzarini_Iso_Grifo_5300_Corsa.jpg
You can keep your McLarens and your Ferraris, your Bentley's and Buggattis….all I want is an Iso-Rivolta Grifo Can Am, or perhaps a Bizzarrini Grifo, or maybe the Manta.

And not one of these is younger than 1972.

Date: 25/11/11 12:33 (UTC)I'd say Ferrari Testarossa.
It was very popular in the times of old when we little boys used to collect those awesome Matchbox toys.
And also stickers from the Turbo chewing gums (http://fahar.blog.bg/photos/109930/original/zh_turbo_gum_3g2g4f.jpg) with all the cars (http://detstvoto.net/uploads/posts/2010-10/1288045637_davki-kartinki-s-koli-turbo-1-50.jpg) in them.

Pontiac Fiero (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pontiac_Fiero)
(Only mid-engined American sports car ever made.)
Lamborghini Countach
Lamborghini Aventador
I mean, these are all just awesome. I always thought Pontiac was a great American marque (and GM was absolutely retarded to cancel it; why didn't they axe Buick?), the DeLorean satisfies my inner scifi geek, and Lamborghini...is fucking Lamborghini. No explanation necessary.
I think, though, if I was going to get a more practical car, it would be a Subaru Impreza. Four doors, looks sporty, and has a great engine. Also looks absolutely beautiful in the blue. Stunning, even.

If it does, then I'll take the Mustang GT:

Why this car specifically? Amazing balance, incredibly fast, lightweight performance.

Absolutely the World Record edition of the Bugatti Veyron (http://www.bugatti.com/en/super-sport/special-editions/world-record-edition.html) averages 431km/hr (268mph). Keep in mind that if I was wealthy enough to buy this car I would assume I would be wealthy enough to regularly close the entire Trans-Canada Hwy to all traffic while I max out the full potential of this incredible machine. This also assumes that I could handle the full potential of this car. And furthermore this assumes this car would never break down, bug out or otherwise ruin my fun.
Slightly more realistically I would love to own an original working Bricklin SV-1 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bricklin_SV-1). Key word here is "working". Not the fastest car ever made, nor the slowest. Instead this was supposed to be all about safety. I had a chance to buy a Bricklin in the 1990's for only $20k. The owner had installed a replacement AMC 360 V8 engine, an oversized rad, etc. In other words totally tinkered with it so it would at least work. The thing is they never did work all that well. After all Malcolm Bricklin was also responsible for the disastrous Yugo.

From:One more for the road...
Date: 25/11/11 20:42 (UTC)You know there is something about a Messerschmitt that I really love. No matter if it's the four wheel FMR Tg500 Tiger (seen racing above) or the three wheeled KR175 or KR200 (seen below)
As a scooter and microcar collector/enthusiast myself I heard the amazing epilogue to the Messerschmitt story. The ultimate barnfind (http://dictionary.sensagent.com/barn+find/en-en/) which oughta be a movie!
In the early 1960's FMR (Messerschmitt) had ended the production and were closing the factory. FMR sold off as much of the left over parts, including frames, engines, tires etc. Whatevr was left was taken home by a German employee who stored them in the storage and boiler rooms of his apartment bldg (he was apparently the bldg super as well).
About a decade later this FMR enthusiast from UK while in Germany heard there was this former employee who had a bunch of spare parts in his basement. He eventually contacted the guy inquiring what, if anything he had for sale. Not only did he have parts but he had assembled several complete Tigers, and had several near completion missing only minor parts. There were dozens of frames hanging from rafters, piles of boxes with headlights, carbs, engines, etc.
Visitor goes back to UK and tells and retells the amazing story and quickly gathers an international list of investors willing to purchase the entire collection or as much as the owner willing to part with. He goes back to Germany to personally make his pitch, but the guy doesn't want to sell. No way, no how.
Several more trips are made to Germany, each time with an even better offer but each time is denied. It comes to a point when the bldg is sold and scheduled for demolition. The owner of the parts collection is old, not welloff and forced to sell, but sells the collection for a much more modest price then had been previously offered. These were not only rare, but the very last new oldstock original parts and models ever.
