In what has to be the most ironic turn of events since GW's flight uniform crotch bulge, those wacky folks at ex-Nazi (GODWIN!) Mercedes Bentz had to send in the stormtroopers Red Skull attornies to rescue on of the FatherLand™'s finest.

A German manager with Mercedes-Benz is free after being arrested for not having a driver’s license with him under Alabama’s new law targeting illegal immigrants, authorities said Friday, in an otherwise routine case that drew the attention of Gov. Robert Bentley.

Tuscaloosa Police Chief Steven Anderson [said] an officer stopped a rental vehicle for not having a tag Wednesday night and asked the driver for his license. The man only had a German identification card, so he was arrested and taken to police headquarters, Anderson said.

The 46-year-old executive was charged with violating the immigration law for not having proper identification, but he was released after an associate retrieved his passport, visa and German driver’s license from the hotel where he was staying, Anderson said.

Mercedes-Benz builds big ole job producing sport-utility vehicles at a big ole job producing plant 20 miles east of Tuscaloosa. They have sausage and beer for the staff.

Somehow, the Governor of Alabama got involved (You don't say?) after a few phone calls from Fritz und Hanz Attornies at Law concerned MB legal reps.

From what I understand, under the old regime law, a citation is about all this guy could expect. If he had not been well connected, chances are he would have been deported to either Mexico, or Canada (because, "dayum Cooter, we can't send him to Messico, he IS white!").

Getting past the law-abiders obvious assertion he should have kept hiz paperz. handy, does this give one hope that:

A. Someone that carrys a gun in Alabama actually has a sense of irony and a sense of humor, OR

B. This law will be equally applied no matter how politically embarassing the attack on Poor Mexican Families illegal immigrants become.

This story reminds me of a colleague from California who was pulled over by a Southern patrolman and treated like an oil spot on the road. (His ethnic origin was not of the western Eurasian variety.) He changed his plans to move to the South, deciding to stay in California where people are treated more humanely.

Oh, and "we" did not kick Hitler's asses.
