Gizmodo recently highlighted some interesting structures in western China found via Google Earth.

What exactly are the Chinese building over there?

After a cursory inspection, the people of the internet have drawn the obvious conclusion...

In all seriousness though...

There is a long history of mock-ups and scale models being used, militarily, as visualisation and training aides. One can find similar structures (though none this large) scattered throughout the American South-west. The remains of Cold-War era training grounds and/or nuclear test sites.

The question of course is who is China planning to fight? and will flying-saucers be involved?

Themselves and everyone else. Kinda like us.

It's a secret code language addressed at their Martian allies (see Mars face), who are planning to respond to the US creating a hyper-sonic weapon by throwing an inter-stellar MHDB (massive hot-dog bomb) and a cannonade of BFBs (big fucking burgers) back at America and covering everything in ketchup and mustard (not mustard, gas; just mustard). Side-effect: all McDonalds run out of business because of the huge amounts of free burgers.

And yes, it involves flying saucers. Lots of them. Where else would they put all those hot-dogs!?

So that's what the tinfoil hats were for! To protect us from ketchup falling from the sky!

Eh, China's got a huge army, and a lot of its Western territories are surprisingly thinly-populated and have a lot more empty territory than people realize. It's like using the Great Plains for a war games exercise in US terms. I think Chinese military power is rather seriously exaggerated by most outside observers and I doubt they're planning to fight anyone. In a serious war the Chinese army would get the shit kicked out of it by pretty much all its neighbors, in a war with the USA we and they both economically collapse so we and the global economy both lose.

Eh, I think that the Chinese also rely a lot on good ol' school bluffing to make their army seem more formidable than it really is and some of this could be in that category, too. Create a lot of flabble with minimum effort, and the PRC stays in the "to be feared" category. Show how weak the PLA really is in terms of a real war, not fighting Uighur guerrillas? That makes the PRC "to be mocked mercilessly" and that's a no-no.

read an article on spiegel.de yesterday, supposedly some of the structures replicate a Taiwanese coastal army base/airfield rather closely.

now that's viable considering how they won't let Taiwan out of their sight.

I read something yesterday that seemed to suggest the "calibration" theory was correct. Damned if I can find that article now, though.

I really don't think Kung Fu and Wushu are going to hold up well against guns and tanks and such. That's why you play the game though.

Cheap chinese labor is cheaper than running computer simulations?

I fucking love this dude. He's on every single one of The History Channel's UFO/aliens/unexplained what-the-fuck specials, and he reminds me of my 10-year-old self, right down to his ability to tie all evidence back into his near-religious belief in extraterrestrials having contacted the human race thousands of times already. Like me, he probably grew up reading Whitley Strieber and Erich Von Daniken.

You should see the guys who regularly appear on the various astronomy/physics documentaries. It's like the freak circus has come to town :D

Well it's not exactly astronomy/physics, although it occasionally pretends to be, but.

It looks like streets in an experimental urban development. Could be another one of those crazy cities they build in the middle of nowhere - with no residents.

DAILY QUOTE:
"The NATO charter clearly says that any attack on a NATO member shall be treated, by all members, as an attack against all. So that means that, if we attack Greenland, we'll be obligated to go to war against ... ourselves! Gee, that's scary. You really don't want to go to war with the United States. They're insane!"
