Date: 11/11/11 18:56 (UTC)In the late 60s it was assumed by many at NASA that the Moon was only a steping stone and that Apollo would soon give way to manned missions to Mars and Venus. As such a signifigant amount of works was done on repurposing Apollo's hardware for interplanetary missions
Boeing's 582-foot NTR was selected as the most promising design and got well into the test phase before Nixon's budget cuts forced NASA to scale back thier ambitions.
