I've posted about the on-going "Gunwalker" scandal before, but considering the the US Attorney General's recent tesitmony and the fact that this is conspiracy week here's an update.

So, support for Gun control in the US is at an all time low, likewise support for drug legalization is at an all time high. With the recent push for austerity those agencies that justify thier existences through drug and gun busts (ATF/DEA) are seeing thier budgets and perhapse thier very existence threatened.

In other words, it's a bad time to be working for the Department of Justice. In order to keep the money flowing they needed a crisis. When no crisis was forthcoming they decided to instigate one.

To be perfectly frank, it pisses me off that the GOP blew thier impeachment wad on Clinton (pun intended), this is exactly the kind of thing the President and/or senior cabinet members should be pilloried for.

Hell, at least in the Watergate Scandal nobody got killed.

You may now return to your regularly scheduled economic wankery already in progress.

ETA:
Attorney General struggles with contradictory testimony. HAH! You don’t say.

Senator Feinstein was in on it

It continues to stun me that this story is not getting more play. I'm not sure why this isn't a bigger deal for some.

I think it's because people just can't really bring themselves to think that our gov't could actually be that corrupt. Plus, they can't see what logical purpose it could have had, so they have to dismiss it as not being accurate, just a conspiracy prank.

For the same reason nobody gives a shit that Oliver North sold weapons to Iran when he says how scary-nasty it is. He didn't care when he sold guns to them, and people who object to this thing but not to that one really aren't interested in illegal weapons trafficking in and of itself.

The attitude of the DOJ isn't helping them either. Do they REALLY think they're teflon and this is just going to go away? 1 ATF agent and 1 border patrol agent are dead because of weapons smuggled to Mexicans by the Obama administration. Unbelievable!

Folks like Ron Paul aside, you're not going to see a lot of GOP outcry on these issues, simply because the Obama DOJ is merely doing what the GOP wishes the Bush DOJ had gotten around to doing. When it comes to "national security" and all the justifications for stripping away civil liberties that it entails, BOTH parties are "the party of big government."

I'm not sure anyone in the GOP ever said, "Y'know what'd be a good idea? Selling guns to Mexicans drug-runners."

Why is it fine when they spy on citizens but they wont let citizens investigate them? Same goes for the US military.

On the Media has a really great report (http://www.onthemedia.org/2011/oct/28/government-vs-freedom-information-act/) about an attempt by the administration to change FOIA rulings to allow them to lie to you about whether a record exists. Like, right now they can "neither confirm nor deny" certain protected records. They want the ability to simply outright deny that they exist. So they want to not even just stop you from investigating, but lie to you about what your investigative requests uncover to stop you from investigating. Freedom!

There is one golden lining to the Gunwalker scandal. Prior to its exposing they were numerous stories talking about how America was supplying all the guns used in the the Mexican violence. Proving it to be a complete lie only went so far... proving that the US DOJ was inflating the numbers by helping them get illegal guns really laid bare the naked lies they were using to push their agenda.

Okay.  You can stop spouting off about Operation Fast and Furious ad nauseum time and time again.  This was nothing more than an extension of Operation Wide Receiver (http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/10/doj_official_regrets_not_connecting_bush-era_gun_walking_tactics_to_fast_and_furious_concerns.php) that occurred during the Bush administration.

There's no relationship. Operation Wide Receiver was a controlled delivery designed to catch suspects. Controlled delivery is a common law enforcement tactic, regardless of our feelings about it.

Compare this to Fast and Furious, which was not a controlled delivery program, but a gunrunning program without tracking.

Eh, this is the reason I'm never convinced with any of the conspiracy theories clustering around the US government. Were it really able to do anything those things required things like this would be easy to conceal or create false-flags or things like that with.

DAILY QUOTE:
"The NATO charter clearly says that any attack on a NATO member shall be treated, by all members, as an attack against all. So that means that, if we attack Greenland, we'll be obligated to go to war against ... ourselves! Gee, that's scary. You really don't want to go to war with the United States. They're insane!"
