I think the big breakthrough isn't going to be solar. Rather, it's not going to be terrestrial solar. When extraterrestrial solar and microwave transmission becomes viable, it'll not only be safe, clean, but also have a huge availability that you can't get with regular solar.

You still have a problem of machinery and cars that require gas, oil and diesel too. The problem goes further because while electricity can be fungible, mechanical power isn't. Unless cheap conversion kits come out for hydrogen combustion or for electric motors come out, we're going to be stuck with a major problem for a long time.
