The problem with lame lyrics can usually be attributed to the fact that most of our modern singer-songwriters start with writing a 'cool' piece of music first.

Then then add the lyrics to it later on. That is why Mike Stipe of REM used to mumble the lyrics on their early albums.

When the words are written first, then the music is written to match, and usually the song makes more sense.

I was interested to hear how David Byrne writes lyrics. He starts with the music, and then starts writing possible words & phrases in a notebook. At the start he has no real idea what the song will be about--he just starts in a very free-form way. Eventually he will choose the phrases that he likes best, and they will form the core idea for the song.
