For certain accomplished and successful people, at least, accomplished and successful by some standard, the world is a game of winning and losing. The general message is that we're not here to survive and improve, we are here to win or lose, and if people lose, then oh well. The underpinning of this mentality is such that society or governance isn't necessarily about wealth or prosperity, but the adjudication of the proper fruits and rewards for winning. It is essentially a fatalistic posture, encoded in the twisted religion of "You will always have the poor, so fuck 'em." This isn't a survival of the fittest mentality, since ultimately nothing actually improves, there is just a changing cast of winners and losers, and this will always be the case, so if you're not rich, don't blame us, blame yourself.

An idea being, of course, that perhaps there are significant chunk of people out there who aren't particularly concerned with "being rich". The narrative of jealousy is natural to the winning constituency, who having adopted this particular world-view, automatically assume everyone else thinks that way, it's just some people are jealous about it. But of course, we have always had the poor, and the poor very rarely protest about anything, much less their constant state of being poor. It's only when certain things happen or develop that the jealous poor come out to say something. Most likely, it's along the lines of, "Fuck, it's hard enough, lay off."

But we don't live in a hands-off world. We live in a constantly demonized world of failure. The middle-class, insofar as it is useful, is ultimately a failed class of losers. Poor people, for their part, are just so much fail it would be useless to try anything in that department. Essentially, we find in the snide and smarmy rhetoric of Herman Cain the attitude of "be rich or go to hell". Also, 2/3rds of black people are brain-washed. And, everyone else needs to lighten up. The general attitude on display here is the general attitude of a coddled person who long ago had to stop dealing with the consequences of interpersonal behavior. At some point, the position of power insulates you from any feedback.

Perhaps the greatest hypocrisy is that of a black man joking about killing Hispanic people, having just castigated a white man for being "insensitive" over a clumsily labeled and clumsily painted rock on some hunting land somewhere. The trite and trivial attitude is so starkly displayed that the only real meat to Herman Cain are his starched collars. This hypocrisy is a common theme for Herman Cain. He famously objected to Bill Clinton's healthcare reform by challenging Slick Willie to justify his plan which would have forced him to lay people off, while already having laid off 500 people. Physician, heal thyself.

Of course, the truth is that Herman Cain doesn't give a shit about some rock on some hunting land somewhere, and never did. It was an opportunistic attack that allowed him to play the race card while running for the votes of people who ostensibly hate the race card. There is nothing more phony than an executive, much less an executive turned radio jock turned politician. Herman Cain is the well-spoken version of George W. Bush.

And of course then there are also those people who have worked hard to make their money. I can think of a few right here.

That is true.

Money does...

... make a person good. The people I have encountered in life who admire wealth are not the kind of people I spend much time with. They are pitiful cases who get smashed, fall down drunk, and pee their pants.

"You will always have the poor, so fuck 'em."

Actually, it's "you'll always have the poor. C'est la vie."

Of course, the truth is that Herman Cain doesn't give a shit about some rock on some hunting land somewhere, and never did. It was an opportunistic attack that allowed him to play the race card while running for the votes of people who ostensibly hate the race card

To be fair, the left-wing in America hasn't had an issue they truly care about in ages either. It's mostly been posturing with outright dishonest outrage. (ie- American treatment of foreigners, War policy, Civil rights, Constitutional rights, et cetera)

Nicely put. It is impossible for everyone to be rich. People are rich only in contrast to the poor.

What we hear a lot of from rich noobs is c'est la vie, largely coming from the narcissistic tendencies that drove them there. But there is another response largely from old money which is more noblesse oblige. I am rich because you are poor, so I'll try to make your life as good as I can.

OK so you got rich partly on your merits, partly by luck and partly by your family connections. The least you could do is not be a dick about it. As history has shown the rich and powerful can be taken down by people with nothing to lose. It isn't jealousy that drives them, it is the desire to not be abused. Blaming the poor is no different than blaming the battered wife.

Why do you see the responses to poverty as "either/or". There's nothing that puts them in opposition.

Honestly, this is a guy who has a plan that's basically a pizza chain discount deal. The joke is right there in front of people, they're just unwilling to admit it exists.

It is true that there will always be those who are poor, relatively speaking. To me that is an argument for social wellfare thought.

Agreed. Saying there will always be the poor, to me, speaks to a desperate need to improve the circumstances of that group, and institute further and broader-reaching welfare programs to help them.

But then, according to the GOP I'm probably a dirty communist or something ;P

What is really amusing is hot guys like Cain act like they got where they got in life by sheer individual ability -- and that their wealth is the singular metric by which such things are measured.

Yes they are! Especially tomatoes. People without tomato allergies don't understand how many foods have tomatoes in them, sometimes for no apparent reason (Cheddar Jack Cheese-Its! Teriyaki Chex Mix, for Christ's sake! Why do they need tomato powder!?)

I dated a guy who had an aversion to tomatoes out of superstition. He once pushed aside a bowl of soup he had been savoring after discovering tomatoes in the list of ingredients.

They are like horrible red fruity versions of medieval demons, lurking in the shadows and waiting to tempt the unwary into sin! The unwary and sin in this case being allergic individuals and anaphylactic shock.

Observations on Cain

From: [identity profile] sophia-sadek.livejournal.com
Cain comes across as more of an oreo than anything else. His policies of bashing the poor appeal more to the likes of David Duke than they do to the average American voter. For some reason, Clarence Thomas comes to mind when I try to think of a peer in politics with which to compare Cain.

Did he really say that poor people (who spend a larger percentage of their income on food) would be able to reduce their tax burden under his plan by buying used products?

That has to be the coolest way to tell people to eat shit I have ever heard.

DAILY QUOTE:
"The NATO charter clearly says that any attack on a NATO member shall be treated, by all members, as an attack against all. So that means that, if we attack Greenland, we'll be obligated to go to war against ... ourselves! Gee, that's scary. You really don't want to go to war with the United States. They're insane!"
