You saw Thora Birch dance to it in the beginning of Ghost World!

You've seen the beer commercial!

Now here's the real thing, the wild number from a 1964 Indian film, Gumnaam.

Enjoy!

Excuse me, but I have to spend the next five minutes wiggling my hips, shaking my head, and dangling my hands limply from my wrists.

PS: I love bollywood films -- and I think this is a terrific song. No idea what it means, but I love it.

Undoubtedly, the most romantic performance...

I love this song, too.

A similar but less popular variant of the song called "Thaiyya Thaiyya" from the same movie and sung by Sukhwinder himself is also excellent, and is much closer to the original Sufi poetry written by the mystic Bulle Shah.

Btw what does "Ho" mean at the end of almost every sentence?
From: [identity profile] pmax3.livejournal.com
"ho" is the imperative form of "hai", where "hai" (third person) means "is". Thus, "ho" is a third-person imperative which means something like "may it be" or "let there be" or "there should/shouldn't be.". So, "tumhara din achhaa ho" means "may your day be good."

But sometimes "ho" is used to mean something similar to "is," in the sense of "[which] occurs," or "[which/who] is found to be." So in the Chaiyya Chaiyya song "jin ke sir ho ishq ki chhao" means "over whom the shade of love is (or remains/occurs/would be found)".

---------------------

"Ho" is also used as the second-person form of "hai" ("is"). So,

Main achhaa hoon: I am good
Tum achhe ho: You are good
Veh/Voh achhaa hai: He is good

Note that in the second person form, "tum" can be replaced by "tu"/"aap", to indicate respectively lesser/greater formality or regard than ordinary. In that case "ho" would be replaced by "hai"/"hain" respectively.

Oh I didn't for a moment consider you might be thinking that!

In this live performance he is singing the exact original:

I guess this was before every Bollywood song had some shrill harpy wailing into a $5 mic. Unfortunately, the dancing is just as painful to the eyes. Yeah, I'm a Debbie Downer today. :P

clearly you have not seen "Chaiyya Chaiyya"

my two sons are on the spectrum and have sensory issues, but they consider that song to be the best song for dancing EVAR. gets them pumping like maniacs.

We used to have singers whose voices were pure gold, without the need for any help from technology...

The lyrics are simple and beautiful, and can be looked up fairly readily.

I like ghazals too but nothing beats Bhangra in my book.

This is very good, but if you want to see what actual Bhangra looks like, you should watch this:

The performance is one of the neighbouring colleges of the one I studied in. Our team usually beat them, and all other colleges in the university, every year :D (Extra security used to be on standby in case our college came second). Bhangra traditionally is set to folk lyrics telling stories of life, harvest, love, separation, union, courage, and of course, Punjab. It is very exhausting and demands extremely tough practice - you have to dance on your toes most of the time and keep grinning like you're on the highest high throughout it (there are points for these sort of things for judging winners).

my love of Bhangra actually prompted me to try learning it but aside from some children's readers and a few phrases an online friend gave me, I haven't gotten very far *sniff*

Ahahaha :D

The lyrics are basically nonsensical. Something like:

There should be some familiarity
Life should be a little easier
O stealers of hearts don't steal your gaze
Tell us your name

LOL!

Our 60's were pretty awesome too. And the 50's even more:

Dev Anand was the coolest actor Bollywood has ever seen. He is still alive, he just celebrated his 88th birthday and is still producing and directing movies - and acting in them! Here's (http://www.hindustantimes.com/Mayank-Shekhar-s-review-Chargesheet/Article1-752071.aspx) a review of his latest creation - draw your own conclusions ;)

And Madhubala was the prettiest woman that has ever existed or will exist in the history of the universe and parts beyond. Or almost. Unfortunately she died young, at 36 :/

True legends die young... Maybe someone up there insists to have them by their side early so they could entertain those guys in heaven with their ingenious performances. Oh well, it's just a theory.

She died young too.

:( Sad. And yes, that does often seem to be the case.

What is the song about?

It's a greeting from a Bulgarian girl to the foreign visitor: welcome to my beautiful country, remember Bulgaria, its people, it scents and its roses. Take this Bulgarian rose from me and let it remind you about me.

Basically.

I used to be crazy about these when they came out:

They're both from a Tamil movie that was later released in Hindi. The songs were a hit, the movie was a dud.

DAILY QUOTE:
"The NATO charter clearly says that any attack on a NATO member shall be treated, by all members, as an attack against all. So that means that, if we attack Greenland, we'll be obligated to go to war against ... ourselves! Gee, that's scary. You really don't want to go to war with the United States. They're insane!"
