One would think that Botswana remained out of the focus of the Great Powers due to it being landlocked, lacking the labour force of West Africa, or the strategic location of East Africa, or the cultural relevance of North Africa, or the natural resources of South Africa. The only abundant resource that could be exploited in Botswana is the diamonds, and this is not something you can make industry out of.
In a sense, the Batswana have been blessed by obscurity, remaining largely irrelevant amidst all the turmoil surrounding them. Something like the hobbits that no one cares about and is even unaware of their existence, until they pop up in the middle of Mordor with a strange-looking ring and scream "My precious!"
