Members of parliament in mainly Roman Catholic Malta have passed an historic law legalising divorce.
The law is due to take effect in October if, as expected, it is approved by President George Abela. The prime minister voted against it.
Currently, Maltese people have to travel abroad to obtain divorces.
First, I guess we should all welcome Malta to the 21st century. Of course, it took HOW long for Ireland to make condoms legal so it's not as if some nations are in much of a position to laugh.
The thing here for me is that this seems like a prime case as to why it's vital for governments to be secular and not highly influenced by religious doctrine. Take a look at the Middle East and you'll see just how well that all works out when taken too far. Granted, Malta is long way from that. But having to go overseas to get a divorce? That's horrible. And it could only be worse if there was abuse involved.
Easy divorces may not be the best thing out there, but I'm willing to call them the lesser of two evils.

But yes, easy, no fault divorce is one of the biggest emancipators of women of the last 100 years.
